Setup

  1. Prepare Your Workpiece: Ensure your wood pieces are cut accurately and are free from debris. Secure the workpiece firmly to a workbench using clamps to prevent movement during drilling.
  2. Select Drill Bit and Depth Stop: Choose the appropriate wood drill bit (6mm, 8mm, or 10mm) corresponding to the dowel size you intend to use. Slide the matching depth stop onto the drill bit and secure it at the desired drilling depth. The depth stop prevents drilling too deep, ensuring consistent dowel holes.
  3. Position the Dowelmaster Jig: Place the Dowelmaster jig onto the edge or surface of the workpiece where the dowel joint is to be made. The jig features guides for different dowel diameters. Ensure the jig is flush and stable against the wood.

Operating Instructions

Creating Dowel Holes

  1. Drilling the First Piece: With the Dowelmaster jig securely positioned, insert the drill bit into the desired guide hole on the jig. Drill straight down, applying steady pressure, until the depth stop makes contact with the jig. Remove the drill.
  2. Marking the Second Piece (for precise alignment): For accurate alignment, especially for T-butt and surface-to-surface joints, insert the appropriate centre points into the drilled holes of the first workpiece. Align the second workpiece to its final position against the first. Press the two pieces together firmly. The centre points will leave small indentations on the second workpiece, indicating the exact drilling locations.
  3. Drilling the Second Piece: For corner joints, reposition the Dowelmaster jig on the second workpiece, aligning it precisely with the edge and desired dowel locations. For T-butt and surface-to-surface joints, align the jig with the marked indentations from the centre points. Drill the holes as described in step 1.

Assembling Dowel Joints

  1. Apply Wood Glue: Apply a small amount of the provided wood glue into each drilled hole and onto the dowel pins. Ensure even coverage.
  2. Insert Dowel Pins: Insert the wood dowel pins into the holes of one workpiece.
  3. Join the Workpieces: Carefully align the second workpiece with the dowel pins and press the two pieces together. Use clamps to hold the joint firmly while the glue dries. Wipe away any excess glue immediately with a damp cloth.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean the Dowelmaster jig and drill bits to remove sawdust and glue residue. A dry brush or compressed air can be used for sawdust. For glue, use a damp cloth before it dries.
  • Storage: Store all components in the provided plastic case in a dry environment to prevent rust and damage.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect drill bits for sharpness and the jig for any signs of wear or damage. Replace worn components as necessary to maintain accuracy.

Troubleshooting

  • Inaccurate Holes: Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the Dowelmaster jig is flush against the wood. Verify that the drill bit is straight and not wobbling. A dull drill bit can also lead to inaccurate holes; replace if necessary.
  • Dowels Not Fitting: Check that the correct drill bit size was used for the dowel pins. Ensure holes are drilled to the correct depth using the depth stop.
  • Joints Not Tight: Apply sufficient wood glue to both the holes and the dowel pins. Ensure the joint is clamped firmly until the glue is fully cured.
