1. Overview

The Sony CFD-E90 is a versatile portable audio system designed for enjoying music from various sources. 2. Features

  • CD Playback: Supports standard audio CDs, CD-R, and CD-RW discs. Features 20-track programming for customized playback.

3. Setup

3.1 Powering the Unit

The CFD-E90 can be powered using the supplied AC power cord or by batteries for portable use.

AC Power Connection:

  1. Ensure the unit is turned off.
  2. Connect the supplied AC power cord to the AC IN jack on the unit.
  3. Plug the other end of the AC power cord into a standard wall outlet.

Battery Installation:

For portable operation, install batteries as follows:

  1. Open the battery compartment cover located on the bottom of the unit.
  2. Insert 6 C-size (R14) batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.
  4. For the remote control, insert 2 AAA-size batteries.
  5. For clock and memory backup, insert 3 AA-size batteries into their dedicated compartment.

Note: Batteries are not included with the unit. When using batteries, expect approximately 7 hours of CD playback, 15 hours of cassette play, or 20 hours of radio use.

3.2 Antenna Setup

  • FM Reception: Extend the telescopic FM antenna fully for optimal FM radio reception. Adjust its direction for the best signal.
  • AM Reception: The unit features a built-in ferrite-bar antenna for AM reception. Rotate the unit itself to improve AM signal strength.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 General Controls

  • Power Button: Press to turn the unit on or off.
  • Volume Control: Use the volume buttons or jog dial to adjust the sound level.
  • Function/Mode Selector: Use to switch between CD, Radio (AM/FM), and Tape modes.

4.2 CD Playback

  1. Press the FUNCTION button to select CD mode.
  2. Open the CD compartment cover by pressing the OPEN/CLOSE button.
  3. Place a CD with the label side facing up.
  4. Close the CD compartment cover. The display will show the total number of tracks.
  5. Press the PLAY button to start playback.
  6. Use the SKIP/SEARCH buttons to navigate between tracks or fast forward/rewind within a track.
  7. Press PAUSE to temporarily stop playback, and STOP to end playback.
  8. To program CD tracks, refer to the detailed instructions in the full user manual.

4.3 Cassette Playback and Recording

  1. Press the FUNCTION button to select Tape mode.
  2. Open the cassette compartment door.
  3. Insert a cassette tape with the desired side facing forward.
  4. Close the cassette compartment door.
  5. Press the PLAY button to start playback.
  6. Use the FAST FORWARD and REWIND buttons to navigate the tape.
  7. Press STOP/EJECT to stop playback or eject the tape.
  8. Recording: To record from CD or radio, ensure a blank tape is inserted. Select the desired source (CD or Radio), then press the RECORD button on the cassette deck. For synchronized CD dubbing, press RECORD on the cassette deck while the CD is in stop mode, then press PLAY on the CD player.

4.4 Radio Operation

  1. Press the FUNCTION button to select Radio mode.
  2. Press the AM/FM button to select the desired band.
  3. Use the TUNE +/- buttons to manually tune to a station, or press and hold to auto-scan for the next available station.
  4. To set a preset station, tune to the desired station, then press and hold one of the FAVORITE RADIO STATIONS (1-3) buttons until the preset number flashes on the display.
  5. To recall a preset station, simply press the corresponding FAVORITE RADIO STATIONS (1-3) button.

4.5 Timer Functions

  • Clock Setting: Use the jog dial and DISPLAY/ENTER button to set the current time.
  • Sleep Timer: Press the SLEEP button repeatedly to cycle through various sleep times (e.g., 90, 60, 30, 15 minutes) before the unit automatically turns off.
  • Wake Timer: Configure the unit to turn on at a specific time to play a CD or radio station. Refer to the full manual for detailed setup.

4.6 Headphone Use

Connect any standard 3.5mm stereo headphones to the headphone jack located on the side of the unit for private listening. The main speakers will automatically mute when headphones are connected.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning the Unit

  • Cabinet: Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn stains, use a cloth lightly dampened with a mild detergent solution, then wipe dry. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • CD Lens: Use a commercially available CD lens cleaner to clean the CD pickup lens.
  • Cassette Deck: Regularly clean the tape heads, pinch rollers, and capstans with a cotton swab lightly moistened with tape head cleaning fluid.

5.2 Battery Replacement

Replace all batteries when the unit's performance degrades or when the battery indicator on the display shows low power. Always replace all batteries of the same type at the same time. Do not mix old and new batteries or different types of batteries.

5.3 General Care

  • Avoid exposing the unit to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, dust, or moisture.
  • Do not place heavy objects on top of the unit.
  • When not in use for extended periods, remove all batteries to prevent leakage.
