3. Game Setup
- Prepare the Game Board: Place the game board on a flat surface between the two players. The board features a battlefield with two lakes in the center.
- Separate the Armies: Each player selects an army (Red or Blue) and takes all 40 corresponding tokens.
- Conceal Your Pieces: Each player arranges their 40 pieces on the first four rows of their side of the board. The ranks of the pieces must face away from the opponent, so only you know the identity of your pieces. The wooden box can be placed in the center of the board as a screen during setup.
- Strategic Placement: Carefully consider the placement of your pieces. Your Flag must be protected, and your Bombs and Miners should be positioned strategically. Higher-ranked pieces should be placed to defend key areas or lead attacks.
- Starting Player: Decide which player goes first. This can be done by coin toss or mutual agreement.

4. How to Play (Game Rules)
4.1. Objective
The primary objective of Stratego is to capture your opponent's Flag. You can also win by eliminating all of your opponent's movable pieces.
4.2. Piece Ranks and Abilities
Each piece has a rank, from 1 (Marshall) to 9 (Scout), plus special pieces. Higher numbers generally indicate lower ranks, except for the Marshall (1) which is the highest. The Spy (S) has a unique ability.
| Rank | Piece Name | Quantity | Special Ability / Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Marshall | 1 | Highest rank. Captures any piece except a Bomb. Can be captured by a Spy. |
| 2 | General | 1 | Second highest rank. |
| 3 | Colonel | 2 | |
| 4 | Major | 3 | |
| 5 | Captain | 4 | |
| 6 | Lieutenant | 4 | |
| 7 | Sergeant | 4 | |
| 8 | Miner | 5 | Only piece that can defuse a Bomb. |
| 9 | Scout | 8 | Can move any number of unoccupied spaces in a straight line (horizontally or vertically). Cannot move through other pieces. |
| S | Spy | 1 | Captures the Marshall if it attacks first. Captured by any other piece. |
| B | Bomb | 6 | Immovable. Destroys any attacking piece except a Miner. |
| F | Flag | 1 | Immovable. Capturing the opponent's Flag wins the game. |
4.3. Movement
- Players take turns moving one piece per turn.
- Most pieces move one square horizontally or vertically. Pieces cannot move diagonally.
- Pieces cannot move onto or through the two lake areas in the center of the board.
- Pieces cannot move onto a square already occupied by another piece of their own army.
- The Scout (rank 9) is the only piece that can move multiple squares in a straight line (horizontally or vertically), as long as the path is clear. It cannot jump over other pieces.
- Bombs and the Flag are immovable.
4.4. Attacking and Capturing
- To attack, move one of your pieces onto a square occupied by an opponent's piece.
- Both players reveal the ranks of their attacking and defending pieces.
- The piece with the higher rank captures the lower-ranked piece. The captured piece is removed from the board.
- If both pieces have the same rank, both are removed from the board.
- Special Attack Rules:
- A Spy (S) captures a Marshall (1) only if the Spy attacks first. If a Marshall attacks a Spy, the Spy is captured.
- Any piece attacking a Bomb (B) is removed from the board, except for a Miner (8).
- A Miner (8) is the only piece that can defuse and capture a Bomb.
- Any piece that attacks and captures the opponent's Flag (F) wins the game immediately.
- The attacking piece occupies the square where the defending piece was located, unless both pieces are removed.
4.5. Ending the Game
The game ends when one of the following conditions is met:
- A player captures the opponent's Flag.
- A player has no movable pieces remaining.
- A player cannot make any legal moves.
