Setup

Customizing the Pick N'Pluck Foam

The Pelican 1450 case includes Pick N'Pluck foam, allowing you to create custom compartments for your gear. To customize:

  1. Plan Your Layout: Arrange your equipment on the foam to determine the optimal placement. Ensure sufficient space between items and around the edges for maximum protection.
  2. Outline Items: Use a marker or simply press items firmly into the foam to create an outline.
  3. Pluck Foam: Carefully remove the pre-scored foam cubes to match the shape of your equipment. Start with smaller sections and expand as needed.
  4. Test Fit: Place your equipment into the customized foam to ensure a snug and secure fit. Adjust by removing more foam if necessary.

Operating the Case

Latches

The Pelican 1450 features Double-Throw latches designed for secure closure and easy opening. To open, lift the latch handle outwards and upwards until it disengages. To close, align the lid and press the latches down firmly until they click into place.

Automatic Pressure Equalization Valve

This case is equipped with an Automatic Pressure Equalization Valve. This valve releases built-up air pressure that can occur due to changes in altitude or temperature, while simultaneously preventing water and dust ingress. No manual operation is required for this valve; it functions automatically.

Watertight Seal

The watertight integrity of the case is maintained by a tongue and groove fit combined with a durable polymer O-ring. Ensure the O-ring is clean and properly seated before closing the case to maintain its waterproof capabilities.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Case

Clean the exterior of the case with mild soap and water. For stubborn dirt, a soft brush can be used. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

O-Ring Care

Periodically inspect the polymer O-ring located in the lid for any signs of damage, cracks, or debris. A clean, well-maintained O-ring is crucial for the case's watertight seal. If necessary, gently clean the O-ring with a soft cloth and mild soap and water. A thin coat of silicone grease (not petroleum-based products) can be applied to the O-ring to maintain its flexibility and sealing properties.

Troubleshooting

Case Not Sealing Properly

  • Check O-Ring: Ensure the O-ring is clean, free of debris, and properly seated in its groove. A damaged or dirty O-ring can compromise the seal.
  • Inspect Latch Alignment: Verify that the lid and latches are correctly aligned before closing.
  • Avoid Overpacking: Do not force the lid closed if the case is overpacked, as this can prevent a proper seal and damage the case or latches.

Difficulty Opening Latches

  • Pressure Build-up: If the case has been subjected to significant changes in altitude or temperature, pressure differences can make latches difficult to open. The automatic pressure equalization valve should mitigate this, but if resistance is felt, ensure the valve is clear of obstructions.
  • Debris: Check for any debris or foreign objects obstructing the latch mechanism.
