3. Setup

  1. Unpack: Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
  2. Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash all components with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. The wooden collar and leather tie can be removed for cleaning the glass carafe.
  3. Placement: Ensure the coffeemaker is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

4. Operating Instructions (Brewing Guide)

Follow these steps for optimal coffee brewing with your Chemex coffeemaker:

Folding a Chemex filter into a cone shape.

  1. Prepare the Filter: Fold the Chemex Bonded Filter into a cone. Place it in the top opening of the coffeemaker with the three-layered side facing the spout.
  2. Rinse the Filter: Pour hot water through the filter to rinse it and preheat the coffeemaker. This also removes any paper taste. Discard the rinse water by pouring it out through the spout.
  3. Add Coffee Grounds: For a 6-cup Chemex, use approximately 1 tablespoon of medium-coarse ground coffee for every 5 ounces of water. Adjust to taste. Place the grounds evenly in the filter.
  4. Bloom: Pour a small amount of hot water (around 200°F / 93°C) over the grounds, just enough to saturate them. Let it sit for 30-45 seconds to allow the coffee to "bloom" (release gases).
  5. Pour: Slowly pour the remaining hot water over the grounds in a circular motion, avoiding the edges. Maintain a consistent water level and allow the coffee to drip through. The total brewing time should be around 4-5 minutes.
  6. Serve: Once all the water has filtered through, carefully remove and discard the filter and grounds. Serve your freshly brewed coffee.

5. Maintenance and Cleaning

  • Glass Carafe: The Chemex coffeemaker is dishwasher safe. For hand washing, remove the wooden collar and leather tie. Wash the glass carafe with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Wooden Collar and Leather Tie: The wooden collar can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the wooden collar or leather tie in water. Allow them to air dry completely before reattaching.

6. Troubleshooting

Slow Drip:
If coffee drips too slowly, your grind might be too fine. Adjust to a coarser grind. Ensure the filter is correctly positioned with the three-layered side towards the spout to allow air to escape.
Weak Coffee:
Increase the amount of coffee grounds or use a finer grind. Ensure water temperature is adequate (around 200°F / 93°C).
Bitter Coffee:
Your water might be too hot, or the extraction time too long. Try slightly cooler water or a coarser grind. Ensure you are using Chemex Bonded Filters, which are designed to remove bitterness.
