3. Preparation and Setup
3.1 Workspace Preparation
- Ensure your workspace is clean, dust-free, and well-ventilated.
- Cover surrounding areas to protect them from overspray.
- Maintain an ambient temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F) for optimal results.
3.2 Surface Preparation
- Clean the polycarbonate R/C body thoroughly with mild soap and water to remove any dirt, grease, or mold release agents.
- Rinse the body completely and allow it to dry fully.
- For best adhesion, lightly scuff the inside surface of the polycarbonate body with a fine-grit abrasive pad (optional, but recommended for maximum durability).
- Mask off any areas you do not wish to paint using painter's tape or liquid mask. Remember to paint the body from the inside.
3.3 Paint Can Preparation
- Shake the can vigorously for at least one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Continue shaking periodically during application.
- Test spray on a scrap piece of polycarbonate or similar material to check spray pattern and color consistency.
4. Operating Instructions (Application)
- Hold the Can: Hold the spray can upright, approximately 30 cm (12 inches) from the surface of the polycarbonate body.
- Apply Light Coats: Apply the paint in thin, even coats. It is better to apply several thin coats than one thick coat to prevent runs and ensure proper adhesion.
- Overlap Strokes: Begin spraying off the edge of the body and move across the surface in smooth, overlapping strokes. Release the nozzle at the end of each stroke.
- Drying Between Coats: Allow each coat to dry to the touch before applying the next. This typically takes 10-15 minutes, depending on humidity and temperature.
- Build Color: Continue applying thin coats until the desired color depth and opacity are achieved. For black, this may require 2-3 coats.
- Curing: After the final coat, allow the paint to cure completely. The full cure time is approximately 24 hours. Avoid handling the painted body excessively during this period.
- Remove Masking: Once the paint is dry to the touch, carefully remove any masking tape or liquid mask.
Important: Always paint the inside of the transparent polycarbonate body. This protects the paint from scratches and impacts during use.
5. Maintenance and Storage
5.1 Can Maintenance
- After each use, invert the can and spray for a few seconds until only clear propellant comes out. This clears the nozzle and prevents clogging.
- Wipe the nozzle clean with a cloth.
5.2 Storage
- Store the paint can in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Ensure the cap is securely placed on the can to prevent accidental discharge or drying of the nozzle.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
6. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven spray pattern / Clogging | Nozzle is clogged or paint not mixed properly. | Shake can vigorously. Clean nozzle by inverting can and spraying until clear, or by carefully removing and cleaning with a solvent (e.g., lacquer thinner). |
| Paint runs or drips | Too much paint applied in one coat, or can held too close. | Apply thinner, even coats. Maintain a distance of 30 cm (12 inches) from the surface. |
| Poor adhesion / Peeling paint | Surface not properly cleaned or prepared. Not for use on non-polycarbonate plastics. | Ensure surface is clean, dry, and free of contaminants. Confirm the material is polycarbonate. |
| Dull finish | Insufficient coats or improper drying conditions. | Apply additional thin coats. Ensure proper ventilation and temperature during drying. |
