3. Setup

3.1 Speaker Placement

  • Satellite Speakers: Position the two satellite speakers equidistant from your primary listening position. For optimal stereo imaging, place them at ear level or slightly above, forming an equilateral triangle with your listening spot. Avoid placing them directly against walls if possible, to prevent excessive bass resonance.
  • Subwoofer: The placement of the passive subwoofer can significantly impact bass response. Experiment with different locations in your room. Common placements include a corner for maximum bass output, or along a wall. Ensure the subwoofer is not obstructed.

3.2 Connections

The Canton Fonissimo +2 is a passive speaker system and requires connection to an external amplifier or AV receiver. Ensure your amplifier has speaker outputs for two main channels and a dedicated passive subwoofer output, or is capable of handling a 2.1 setup with passive components.

  1. Power Off: Before making any connections, ensure your amplifier/receiver is turned off and unplugged from the power outlet.
  2. Prepare Speaker Wires: Strip approximately 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) of insulation from the ends of your speaker wires. Twist the bare wire strands tightly.
  3. Connect Satellite Speakers:
    • Connect the positive (+) terminal (usually red) of the left satellite speaker to the left positive (+) speaker output on your amplifier.
    • Connect the negative (-) terminal (usually black) of the left satellite speaker to the left negative (-) speaker output on your amplifier.
    • Repeat this process for the right satellite speaker, connecting it to the right speaker outputs on your amplifier.
    • Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -) for both speakers to avoid phase issues and poor sound quality.
  4. Connect Passive Subwoofer:
    • Connect the positive (+) terminal of the passive subwoofer to the dedicated passive subwoofer positive (+) output on your amplifier/receiver.
    • Connect the negative (-) terminal of the passive subwoofer to the dedicated passive subwoofer negative (-) output on your amplifier/receiver.
    • If your amplifier does not have a dedicated passive subwoofer output, consult your amplifier's manual for alternative connection methods for a 2.1 passive setup, or consider using a separate subwoofer amplifier.
  5. Power On: Once all connections are secure, plug in and power on your amplifier/receiver.

4. Operating Instructions

As a passive speaker system, the Canton Fonissimo +2 does not have its own controls. All operational adjustments are made via your connected amplifier or AV receiver.

  • Power: Turn on your amplifier/receiver to power the speaker system.
  • Volume Control: Adjust the overall volume using the volume control on your amplifier/receiver.
  • Bass/Treble Adjustment: Use the tone controls (bass, treble) on your amplifier/receiver to fine-tune the sound to your preference.
  • Subwoofer Level: If your amplifier/receiver has a separate subwoofer level control, adjust it to balance the bass output with the satellite speakers.
  • Source Selection: Select your desired audio source (e.g., CD player, streaming device, TV) using your amplifier/receiver's input selector.

5. Maintenance

Proper care will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Canton Fonissimo +2 Speaker System.

  • Cleaning:
    • Dust the speaker cabinets regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
    • For stubborn marks, lightly dampen a cloth with water (do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners).
    • Avoid spraying cleaning liquids directly onto the speakers.
    • If the speaker grilles are removable, gently vacuum them to remove dust.
  • Environment:
    • Keep speakers away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive humidity.
    • Ensure adequate airflow around the speakers to prevent overheating.
  • Handling:
    • Avoid touching the speaker cones or tweeters, as this can cause damage.
    • When moving the speakers, lift them carefully to avoid dropping.
