4. Setup

  1. Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash the carafe and carafe lid in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. Run a full cycle with just water (no coffee) to clean the internal components.
  2. Place Filter: Insert a #2 cone-shaped paper filter into the filter basket. Ensure it sits snugly against the sides.
  3. Add Ground Coffee: Add the desired amount of ground coffee into the filter. For best results, use one tablespoon of ground coffee per cup.
  4. Fill Water Reservoir: Open the top lid of the coffeemaker. Pour fresh, cold water into the water reservoir located at the back of the unit. The internal markings indicate the water level for 1 to 4 cups. Do not exceed the 4-cup maximum fill line.
  5. Position Carafe: Place the stainless-steel carafe with its lid securely on the warming plate. Ensure it is properly seated to activate the brew-pause feature.

  2. Brewing Process: Water will heat up and drip through the coffee grounds into the carafe. The brewing process for 4 cups typically takes approximately 5-6 minutes.

6. Brew Pause Feature

The Brew Pause feature allows you to temporarily stop the flow of coffee from the filter basket to the carafe. This enables you to pour a cup of coffee before the entire brewing cycle is complete. Simply remove the carafe from the warming plate, pour your coffee, and then return the carafe to its position within 20 seconds to resume brewing. If the carafe is not returned promptly, the filter basket may overflow.

7. Automatic Shutoff

For your convenience and safety, the Cuisinart DCC-450BK Coffeemaker is equipped with a 30-minute automatic shutoff function. After 30 minutes from the start of the brewing cycle, the warming plate will automatically turn off, and the ON indicator light will extinguish. This feature helps conserve energy and provides peace of mind.

8. Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and longevity of your coffeemaker.

  • Daily Cleaning: After each use, discard the used coffee filter and grounds. Wash the filter basket, carafe, and carafe lid in warm, soapy water. These parts are dishwasher safe (top rack only).
  • Exterior Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the coffeemaker with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
  • Decalcification: Mineral deposits (calcium) can build up in your coffeemaker over time, affecting its performance. Decalcify your coffeemaker every few months, or more often if you use hard water. To decalcify, fill the water reservoir with a mixture of 1/3 white vinegar and 2/3 water. Press the ON/OFF button to start a brew cycle. When the solution begins to dispense, turn the coffeemaker OFF and let it soak for at least 20 minutes. Then, turn the coffeemaker ON again and let the remaining solution brew through. Rinse by running 2-3 cycles with fresh, cold water.
