4.2 Installing Router Bits

  1. Unplug the router.
  2. Press and hold the spindle lock button to prevent the spindle from rotating.
  3. Insert the appropriate collet (1/4-inch or 1/2-inch) into the spindle if not already installed.
  4. Insert the router bit into the collet, ensuring at least 3/4 of the shank is inserted for proper retention. The self-releasing collets provide excellent bit retention.
  5. Use the provided wrench to tighten the collet nut securely. Do not overtighten.
  6. Release the spindle lock.

4.3 Adjusting Depth

  1. Unplug the router.
  2. Loosen the depth adjustment clamp on the fixed base.
  3. Rotate the micro-fine depth adjustment ring to achieve the desired routing depth. Adjustments can be made in 1/64-inch increments.
  4. Once the desired depth is set, tighten the depth adjustment clamp to lock the setting.

5. Operating the Router

5.1 Powering On/Off

The router features a dust-sealed switch for durability. The unique switch and cordset configuration allows for comfortable operation whether you are right-handed or left-handed.

  • To turn on, depress the trigger switch.
  • To turn off, release the trigger switch.

5.2 Variable Speed Control

The DW618 router is equipped with electronic variable speed control, allowing you to adjust the RPM from 8,000 to 24,000. This ensures constant speed under load and provides optimal performance for different materials and bit types.

Figure 6: Close-up of the variable speed dial on the DW618 motor pack.

  • Rotate the speed dial on the motor pack to select the desired RPM. Higher numbers correspond to higher speeds.
  • Use lower speeds for larger diameter bits, harder materials, or when more control is needed.
  • Use higher speeds for smaller diameter bits and softer materials.

5.3 Soft Start Feature

The soft start feature gradually increases the motor speed upon startup, reducing start-up torque. This provides enhanced control and helps prevent the router from jumping, especially when working with delicate materials or when starting a cut.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your DEWALT DW618 router.

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean the router with a soft, dry cloth. Use compressed air to clear dust and debris from ventilation openings. Do not use solvents or harsh chemicals.
  • Bit Care: Keep router bits sharp and clean. Dull bits can cause overheating and poor cut quality.
  • Collet Maintenance: Periodically clean the collets and collet nuts to ensure proper bit gripping. Replace worn or damaged collets.
  • Cordset Inspection: Regularly inspect the detachable cordset for any signs of damage, fraying, or cuts. Replace if damaged.
  • Lubrication: The router's internal components are factory lubricated and do not require additional lubrication.

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your DEWALT DW618 router.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Router does not start. No power supply; faulty cordset; motor not properly seated.Check power outlet and circuit breaker; inspect cordset for damage; ensure motor is fully engaged and latches are secured.
Poor cut quality or burning wood.Dull bit; incorrect speed setting; feeding too fast.Replace or sharpen bit; adjust speed to appropriate RPM for material and bit size; reduce feed rate.
Excessive vibration.Loose bit; bent bit shank; damaged collet.Ensure bit is securely tightened; inspect bit for damage and replace if necessary; check collet for wear and replace if damaged.
Depth adjustment slips.Depth adjustment clamp not tightened; debris in mechanism.Ensure clamp is fully tightened; clean adjustment mechanism.
