5. Operating Instructions
Always ensure the router is properly set up and the workpiece is secure before beginning operation.
5.1 General Routing
- Plug the router into a suitable power outlet.
- Hold the router firmly with both hands on the handles.
- Turn on the router. Allow the motor to reach full speed before contacting the workpiece.
- Guide the router smoothly along the desired path, applying steady, even pressure. Avoid forcing the tool.
- For best results and to prevent tear-out, always route against the direction of the bit's rotation.
- After completing the cut, lift the router clear of the workpiece and turn it off. Wait for the bit to stop rotating before setting the tool down.

6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your DEWALT DW616 router.
- Cleaning: After each use, clean the router and its components, especially the collet area, to remove sawdust and debris. Use a soft brush or compressed air.
- Cord Inspection: Periodically inspect the power cord for any signs of damage, cuts, or fraying. Replace damaged cords immediately.
- Bit Condition: Ensure router bits are sharp and free from damage. Dull or damaged bits can cause kickback and poor cut quality.
- Lubrication: Refer to the detailed service manual for specific lubrication requirements, if any.
- Storage: Store the router in a clean, dry place, out of reach of children.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your DEWALT DW616 router, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:
- Router Fails to Start: Check if the power cord is securely plugged in. Ensure the power switch is in the 'ON' position. Verify the circuit breaker has not tripped.
- Poor Cut Quality/Burning Wood: The router bit may be dull or damaged; replace it. The feed rate might be too fast; reduce it. The depth of cut might be too deep; take shallower passes.
- Excessive Vibration: Ensure the router bit is properly installed and tightened in the collet. Check if the bit is bent or damaged.
- Difficulty Adjusting Depth: Ensure the motor cam lock is fully loosened before attempting to adjust the depth. Clean any debris from the adjustment mechanism.
