2. Setup

2.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove the microphone and its accessories from the packaging. Inspect all components for any signs of damage. The package should include:

  • Sennheiser E 835 Dynamic Cardioid Vocal Microphone
  • MZQ 800 Microphone Clip
  • Carrying Pouch

2.2 Connecting the Microphone

The E 835 uses a standard 3-pin XLR connector for audio output. Connect a balanced XLR cable (not included) from the microphone's output to the input of your mixer, audio interface, or amplifier.

Ensure the cable is securely connected to prevent signal loss or interference.

2.3 Mounting the Microphone

Attach the supplied MZQ 800 microphone clip to a standard microphone stand. Securely insert the E 835 microphone into the clip. Adjust the stand and clip to the desired height and angle for optimal performance.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Proper Microphone Handling

Hold the microphone firmly but comfortably. For vocal performances, position the microphone approximately 1-6 inches (2.5-15 cm) from your mouth. Experiment with distance to achieve the desired vocal presence and tone.

3.2 Cardioid Pickup Pattern

The E 835 features a cardioid pickup pattern, meaning it is most sensitive to sounds coming from the front and rejects sounds from the sides and rear. This characteristic is highly beneficial for:

  • Feedback Rejection: Minimizes the likelihood of feedback in live sound environments.
  • Isolation: Helps isolate the desired sound source (e.g., vocals) from other instruments or ambient noise on stage.

Always point the front of the microphone (the grille end) directly at the sound source.

3.3 Proximity Effect

Like all directional microphones, the E 835 exhibits a proximity effect. This means that as you move closer to the microphone, the bass frequencies become more pronounced. You can use this effect creatively to add warmth or fullness to vocals, or maintain a consistent distance to avoid excessive bass buildup.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Cleaning

To clean the microphone's exterior, use a soft, dry cloth. For the grille, you can gently wipe it with a slightly damp cloth, ensuring no moisture enters the microphone capsule. Do not use harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners.

4.2 Storage

When not in use, store the E 835 in its supplied carrying pouch to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical damage. Avoid storing the microphone in extreme temperatures or high humidity.
