Introduction
This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the setup, operation, and maintenance of your Iomega 100MB USB-Powered Zip Drive. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the device to ensure proper functionality and longevity.
Package Contents
- Iomega 100MB USB-Powered Zip Drive
- USB Cable
- Note: A 100 MB Zip disk is not included and must be purchased separately.
Setup
- Connect the USB Cable: Insert the square USB-B connector into the corresponding port on the Iomega Zip Drive.
- Connect to Computer: Plug the USB-A connector of the cable into an available USB port on your computer (PC or Mac). The drive is powered directly through this USB connection.
- Driver Installation (if necessary): In most modern operating systems (Windows 10, macOS), the drive should be recognized automatically without the need for additional drivers. If prompted, allow your operating system to install generic USB mass storage device drivers.
- Insert a Zip Disk: Gently slide a 100MB Zip disk into the drive's slot until it clicks into place. Ensure the disk is inserted with the correct orientation.
- Verify Recognition: Check your computer's file explorer (e.g., "This PC" on Windows, "Finder" on macOS) to confirm that the Iomega Zip Drive appears as a removable storage device.

Operating Instructions
Accessing Data
Once the drive is recognized by your computer, you can access its contents like any other removable drive. Navigate to the drive letter (Windows) or mounted volume (macOS) to view, copy, or move files to and from the Zip disk.
- Data Transfer Rate: The drive supports a data transfer rate of approximately 0.9 MB/sec.
- Disk Capacity: Each 100 MB Zip disk can store the equivalent of approximately 85 standard floppy disks.
Ejecting a Zip Disk
To safely remove a Zip disk, always use the software eject function provided by your operating system:
- Windows: Right-click on the Zip drive icon in "This PC" and select "Eject".
- macOS: Drag the Zip drive icon from the desktop or Finder sidebar to the Trash, or click the eject icon next to the drive name in Finder.
After the software eject command is issued, the disk will partially eject, allowing you to pull it out completely.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the exterior of the drive. Do not use liquid cleaners or abrasive materials.
- Storage: Store the drive in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. When not in use, it is recommended to remove the Zip disk.
- Handling Disks: Always handle Zip disks by their edges. Avoid touching the magnetic media surface. Store disks in their protective cases when not in use.
- Power: As the drive is USB-powered, ensure your USB port provides sufficient power. Avoid connecting through unpowered USB hubs if experiencing connectivity issues.
Troubleshooting
- Drive not recognized by computer:
- Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the drive and the computer.
- Try connecting the drive to a different USB port on your computer.
- Restart your computer.
- If using a USB hub, try connecting the drive directly to a computer USB port.
- Disk not ejecting:
- Ensure you have used the software eject function from your operating system.
- Do not force the disk out. If the software eject fails, try restarting your computer and then attempting the eject process again.
- Error messages during data transfer:
- Verify that the Zip disk is not full or write-protected.
- Ensure the disk is properly seated in the drive.
- Try using a different Zip disk to rule out a faulty disk.
