- Entering Numbers: Use the numeric keypad (0-9) and the decimal point key.
- Arithmetic Operations: Use the +, -, * (multiplication), and / (division) keys. Press ENTER to calculate.
- Clearing the Screen: Press CLEAR to clear the current entry line or the entire screen.
Graphical Analysis
The TI-82 allows for graphical representation and analysis of functions.
- Defining Functions: Press Y= to access the function editor. Enter up to 10 rectangular, six parametric, and six polar functions.
- Graphing: Press GRAPH to display the defined functions.
- Tracing: Use the TRACE key and arrow keys to move along the graph and view coordinates.
- Analyzing Graphs: Use the CALC menu (2nd TRACE) to find function values, roots, intersections, maximums, minimums, derivatives, and integrals.
Data Analysis and Statistics
The calculator supports various statistical computations and data plotting.
- Entering Data: Press STAT, then select Edit to enter data into lists. Up to 99 elements per list are supported.
- Statistical Calculations: From the STAT menu, select CALC to perform one-variable statistics, linear regression, quadratic regression, etc.
- Plotting Data: Press 2nd Y= (STAT PLOT) to define and store up to three plots, including scatter plots, box-and-whisker plots, xy-lines, and histograms.
Programming
The TI-82 supports keystroke programming for custom routines.
- Creating Programs: Press PRGM, then select NEW to create a new program.
- Programming Commands: Access commands for conditional tests (If, Then, Else), loops (For, While), and jumping (Goto, Lbl).
- Executing Programs: From the PRGM menu, select EXEC and choose the program to run.
Data Collection
The TI-82 is compatible with the CBL 2, CBL, and CBR for collection and analysis of real-world data. Refer to the respective data collection device manuals for connection and operation instructions.
Maintenance
Cleaning
To clean your TI-82 calculator, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the casing or screen.
Storage
Store the calculator in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. If storing for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent corrosion.
Battery Replacement
Replace batteries when the display dims or the calculator behaves erratically. Refer to the "Battery Installation" section under Setup for detailed instructions.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Calculator does not turn on. | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Replace batteries with fresh AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity. |
| Display is dim or blank. | Low batteries or contrast setting is too low. | Replace batteries. Adjust display contrast by pressing 2nd then UP ARROW (for darker) or DOWN ARROW (for lighter). |
| Calculator freezes or behaves erratically. | Software glitch or low battery. | Press 2nd then MEM (Memory), then select Reset. Choose All RAM to clear memory (this will delete all data and programs). Alternatively, remove and reinsert one battery to perform a hard reset. |
| Error message displayed. | Syntax error, domain error, or other calculation issue. | Consult the calculator's built-in help for specific error codes or review your input for correctness. |
