4. Setup
4.1. Installing/Changing Router Bits
- Disconnect Power: Always unplug the router before installing or changing bits.
- Loosen Collet Nut: Use the provided collet wrench to loosen the collet nut.
- Insert Bit: Insert the desired router bit into the collet. Ensure at least 3/4 of the shank is inserted to prevent slippage and damage.
- Tighten Collet Nut: Securely tighten the collet nut with the wrench. Do not overtighten. The auto-release collet system facilitates easy bit removal.
4.2. Adjusting Depth
- Loosen Cam-Lock Lever: Locate and loosen the cam-lock lever on the fixed base.
- Coarse Adjustment: Adjust the motor pack up or down within the base for approximate depth.
- Micro Depth Adjustment: For fine-tuning, use the micrometer depth adjuster. This allows for precise adjustments accurate to 1/128-inch.
- Secure Lever: Once the desired depth is set, firmly tighten the cam-lock lever to secure the motor in place.
5. Operating Instructions
The 690LR router is suitable for a variety of woodworking tasks, including edge profiling, dadoes, and pattern routing. Always ensure the router is stable and the workpiece is secure before operation.
5.1. General Operation
- Ensure the router bit is sharp and appropriate for the material.
- Always make multiple shallow passes rather than one deep pass, especially with harder materials, to reduce strain on the motor and improve cut quality.
- Maintain a firm grip on both ergonomic handles during operation.
- Feed the router into the material at a consistent, moderate speed.
5.2. Router Table Use
The 690LR can be mounted to a router table. The quick fixed-base motor release allows for easy transfer between handheld and table-mounted applications. Ensure the router is securely fastened to the table according to the router table manufacturer's instructions.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Regularly clean the router, especially the collet area and base, to remove sawdust and debris. A dust-sealed switch and sealed ball-bearing construction help protect internal components.
- Bit Care: Keep router bits sharp and clean. Dull bits can cause burning and excessive motor strain.
- Cord Inspection: Periodically inspect the power cord for any damage.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Router does not start | No power, faulty switch | Check power connection, inspect switch. |
| Burning wood during routing | Dull bit, too slow feed rate, too deep cut | Replace/sharpen bit, increase feed rate, make shallower passes. |
| Rough cut quality | Dull bit, incorrect bit for material, excessive feed rate | Replace/sharpen bit, use appropriate bit, reduce feed rate. |
| Excessive vibration | Loose bit, damaged bit, motor imbalance | Ensure bit is tight, replace damaged bit, contact service if motor issue. |
