5. Operating Instructions
5.1. Brewing Coffee
- Fill Water Reservoir: Open the top lid and pour fresh, cold water into the water reservoir using the carafe. Refer to the magnified water-level window for accurate measurement. Do not exceed the 12-cup maximum fill line.
- Add Coffee Grounds: Place the permanent gold tone filter (or a paper filter if preferred) into the filter basket. Add your desired amount of ground coffee. A general guideline is one tablespoon of coffee per cup, but adjust to your taste.
- Close Lid: Ensure the top lid is securely closed.
- Place Carafe: Position the empty carafe with its lid on the warming plate.
- Select Brew Strength: Use the electronic control panel to select one of the three brewing cycle options:
- 1-3 cups (for full-flavored small batches)
- 4-12 cups (medium strength)
- 4-12 cups (strong)
- Start Brewing: Press the "On" button. The coffeemaker will begin the brewing process.
5.2. Using the 24-Hour Programmable Timer
To enjoy fresh coffee at a specific time, utilize the programmable timer:
- Set the current time on the LCD display using the appropriate buttons.
- Prepare the coffeemaker for brewing as described in Section 5.1 (water, coffee grounds, carafe in place).
- Press the "Prog" button and set your desired brew time.
- Activate the timer function (refer to your control panel for specific button). The coffeemaker will automatically start brewing at the programmed time.
5.3. Pause & Serve Feature
The coffeemaker is equipped with a 20-second pause in the brewing cycle. This allows you to temporarily remove the carafe to pour a cup of coffee before the full brewing cycle is complete. Ensure the carafe is returned to the warming plate within 20 seconds to prevent overflow from the filter basket.
5.4. Warming Plate Settings
The warming plate can be set to six different temperatures to maintain your coffee at the desired heat. Consult the electronic control panel for instructions on adjusting these settings. The warming plate also features an automatic shut-off for safety and energy saving.
6. Maintenance
6.1. Daily Cleaning
- Always unplug the coffeemaker before cleaning and allow it to cool completely.
- Wash the carafe, carafe lid, and permanent gold tone filter in warm, soapy water. These parts are generally dishwasher-safe (top rack recommended), but hand washing is often preferred for longevity.
- Wipe the exterior of the coffeemaker with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
- Do not immerse the coffeemaker base in water or any other liquid.
6.2. Decalcification
Mineral deposits from water can build up over time and affect coffeemaker performance. Your KRUPS 453-71 features an electronic warning when decalcification is needed. To decalcify:
- Fill the water reservoir with a solution of white vinegar and water (e.g., 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water).
- Place an empty carafe on the warming plate.
- Run a full brewing cycle.
- After the cycle, let the coffeemaker cool for 15 minutes.
- Discard the vinegar solution and rinse the carafe thoroughly.
- Run two full cycles with fresh, clean water to flush out any remaining vinegar taste.
Regular decalcification helps maintain optimal brewing performance and extends the life of your coffeemaker.
6.3. Water Filter Replacement
The NaturActiv charcoal water filtration system helps reduce chlorine. For best results and taste, replace the charcoal filter cartridge approximately every two months, or as indicated by the filter's usage. Refer to the specific instructions provided with your replacement filters for proper installation.
7. Troubleshooting
If your coffeemaker is not functioning as expected, please check the following common issues before contacting customer service:
- Coffeemaker does not turn on: Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into a working electrical outlet. Check if the "On" button is pressed.
- Coffee is not brewing: Verify that the water reservoir contains sufficient water and that the carafe is correctly placed on the warming plate. Ensure the filter basket is properly seated.
- Coffee tastes weak or too strong: Adjust the amount of coffee grounds used or select a different brew strength setting on the control panel. Ensure the water filter is not expired if in use.
- Water overflowing from filter basket: This can occur if too much coffee is used, the coffee is too finely ground, or the filter is clogged. Ensure the permanent filter is clean or replace the paper filter if applicable.
- Electronic decalcification warning is on: Perform a decalcification cycle as described in Section 6.2.
