Components

Before starting, please ensure all components are present in your Scrabble Junior box:

• 1 Double-Sided Game Board: One side for 'Words & Pictures' (Level 1) and the other for 'Colours & Counters' (Level 2).
• 100 Letter Tiles: Square tiles with letters of the alphabet.
• 4 Tile Racks: For players to hold their letter tiles.
• 44 Scoring Counters: Small, colored tokens used for scoring in Level 2.

Setup

1. Unpack Components: Carefully remove all game pieces from the box.
2. Choose a Game Level: Decide which side of the game board to use based on the players' age and skill level.
   • Level 1: Words & Pictures (for younger children, ages 5-7)
   • Level 2: Colours & Counters (for older children, ages 7+)
3. Place the Board: Lay the chosen side of the game board face up in the center of the playing area.
4. Prepare Letter Tiles: Place all 100 letter tiles into the tile bag and shake thoroughly.
5. Distribute Racks: Give each player one tile rack.
6. Draw Tiles: Each player draws 7 letter tiles from the bag and places them on their rack, hidden from other players.
7. Prepare Scoring Counters (Level 2 only): If playing Level 2, place the 44 scoring counters in a pile near the board, accessible to all players.

Operating Instructions: How to Play

Level 1: Words & Pictures (Ages 5-7)

This level is designed for younger players to learn word recognition and basic spelling.

Objective:

Be the first player to cover all the pre-printed words on their section of the game board with matching letter tiles.

Gameplay:

1. The youngest player goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
2. On your turn, look at the words on your section of the board. Try to match the letters on your rack to the letters in the words.
3. Place one or more of your letter tiles onto the corresponding squares of a word. You must complete a full word on your turn if possible.
4. After placing tiles, draw new tiles from the bag to replenish your rack to 7 tiles.
5. If you cannot make a word, you can exchange some or all of your tiles by placing them back in the bag, drawing new ones, and then ending your turn.
6. The game ends when a player covers all the words on their section of the board. That player is the winner.

Level 2: Colours & Counters (Ages 7+)

This level introduces more traditional Scrabble gameplay with a simplified scoring system.

Objective:

Score the most points by creating words on the game board and collecting scoring counters.

Gameplay:

1. All players draw 7 tiles from the bag.
2. The player with the letter closest to 'A' goes first. Play proceeds clockwise.
3. On your turn, form a word using two or more of your letter tiles and place it on the board.
   • The first word must cover the center star square.
   • Subsequent words must connect to an existing word on the board, either horizontally or vertically.
4. Scoring: For each letter tile you place on a colored square, take one scoring counter from the pile. If you place a tile on a square that already has a counter, you still take one.
5. After placing tiles and collecting counters, draw new tiles from the bag to replenish your rack to 7 tiles.
6. If you cannot make a word, you can exchange some or all of your tiles by placing them back in the bag, drawing new ones, and then ending your turn.
7. The game ends when all tiles have been drawn from the bag and one player has used all the tiles on their rack, or when no more words can be formed.
8. Winning: The player with the most scoring counters at the end of the game is the winner.

Maintenance

• Cleaning: Wipe the game board and plastic components with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn marks, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by immediate drying. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
• Storage: Store all game components in the original box in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Ensure all tiles and counters are placed back in the tile bag or designated compartments to prevent loss.
• Handling: Handle letter tiles and scoring counters carefully to prevent damage or loss.
