Key Features:

  • Type: CH
  • Poles: 1
  • Amperage: 30 Amps
  • Voltage: 120 Volts
  • Compatibility: Designed for Cutler-Hammer load centers
  • Space Requirement: Requires one 3/4-inch space

4. Installation

IMPORTANT: Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.

Prerequisites:

  • Compatible Cutler-Hammer load center.
  • Available 3/4-inch space in the load center.
  • Appropriate wire gauge for a 30-amp circuit.

Installation Steps:

  1. Turn Off Main Power: Locate the main circuit breaker in your electrical panel and switch it to the OFF position. Verify that power is off using a voltage tester.
  2. Remove Panel Cover: Carefully remove the cover of the electrical load center.
  3. Identify Slot: Select an empty 3/4-inch slot on the bus bar within the load center.
  4. Install Breaker: Hook the rear clip of the CH130 circuit breaker onto the bus bar. Press the front of the breaker firmly until it snaps into place.
  5. Connect Wire: Connect the circuit wire (typically the hot wire) to the terminal screw on the circuit breaker. Ensure the wire is stripped to the correct length and the screw is tightened securely. Refer to Figure 3.1 for terminal location.
  6. Replace Panel Cover: Once all connections are secure and verified, replace the load center cover.
  7. Restore Main Power: Switch the main circuit breaker back to the ON position.

5. Operation

The CH130 circuit breaker functions as an on/off switch for its designated circuit and provides automatic protection against overloads and short circuits.

Switch Positions:

  • ON: The circuit is energized, and power is flowing.
  • OFF: The circuit is de-energized, and power is interrupted.
  • TRIPPED: The breaker has automatically opened due to an overload or short circuit. The handle will typically be in a central or intermediate position, indicating a trip.

Resetting a Tripped Breaker:

  1. Identify Cause: Determine and correct the cause of the trip (e.g., unplug overloaded appliances).
  2. Full OFF: Push the breaker handle firmly to the full OFF position. You may feel a click.
  3. Turn ON: Push the breaker handle to the full ON position.
  4. If the breaker immediately trips again, do not attempt to reset it. Consult a qualified electrician.

6. Maintenance

The Cutler Hammer CH130 circuit breaker requires minimal maintenance. It contains no user-serviceable parts.

Recommended Maintenance:

  • Periodic Visual Inspection: Annually, or if issues arise, have a qualified electrician inspect the circuit breaker and its connections for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose wiring.
  • Cleaning: If necessary, the exterior of the breaker can be wiped with a dry, clean cloth. Ensure power is off before cleaning. Do not use liquids or abrasive cleaners.

7. Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your CH130 circuit breaker, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps. For persistent or complex issues, always consult a qualified electrician.

Common Issues:

  • Breaker Trips Frequently:
    • Possible Cause: Circuit overload (too many devices drawing power).
    • Solution: Unplug some devices from the circuit. Redistribute loads if possible.
    • Possible Cause: Short circuit in wiring or appliance.
    • Solution: Disconnect all devices from the circuit. If the breaker still trips, there may be a wiring fault. Consult an electrician.
  • Breaker Does Not Reset:
    • Possible Cause: Persistent overload or short circuit.
    • Solution: Ensure all devices are unplugged from the circuit. If it still won't reset, there may be an internal fault with the breaker or a severe wiring issue. Consult an electrician.
  • No Power to Circuit (Breaker ON):
    • Possible Cause: Loose connection at the breaker terminal or in the circuit wiring.
    • Solution: With main power OFF, have an electrician check all connections.
    • Possible Cause: Faulty breaker.
    • Solution: A qualified electrician can test the breaker for proper operation.
