5. Controls and Display

6. Setup

6.1. Battery Installation

The ATS-404 requires 4 AA batteries for portable operation.

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the unit.
  2. Open the battery compartment cover.
  3. Insert 4 AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+ and -) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

6.2. Power Connection

For continuous use or to conserve batteries, you can use the AC power adapter (if included).

  1. Connect the AC adapter to the DC IN jack on the side of the radio.
  2. Plug the adapter into a standard wall outlet.

6.3. Antenna Adjustment

  • FM/Shortwave: Extend the telescopic antenna fully and rotate it for optimal reception.
  • AM (MW): The radio uses a built-in ferrite bar antenna. For best AM reception, rotate the entire radio unit.

7. Operating Instructions

7.1. Power On/Off

Press the POWER button to turn the radio on or off.

7.2. Band Selection

Press the BAND button repeatedly to cycle through FM, AM (MW), and Shortwave (SW) bands.

7.3. Tuning

  • Manual Tuning: Use the TUNING Up/Down Arrows to adjust the frequency incrementally.
  • Direct Frequency Entry: Enter the desired frequency using the numerical buttons, then press ENTER.
  • Auto Scan: Press and hold the TUNING Up/Down Arrows to automatically scan for the next available station.
  • Shortwave Meter Band Selection: When in SW mode, press the SW SELECT button to jump between predefined shortwave meter bands.

7.4. Volume Control

Adjust the volume using the dedicated volume control knob, typically located on the side of the unit.

7.5. Memory Presets

The radio can store up to 45 stations (presets).

  1. Storing a Station: Tune to the desired station. Press and hold the M (Memory) button until the preset number flashes. Use the numerical buttons or TUNING Arrows to select a memory location, then press ENTER.
  2. Recalling a Station: Press the M button briefly, then enter the preset number using the numerical buttons. Alternatively, use the TUNING Arrows to cycle through stored presets after pressing M.
  3. Auto Preset System: Press the AUTO PRESET button to automatically scan and store strong stations into memory.
  4. Memory Scan: Press the MEMO SCAN button to automatically scan through all stored memory presets, playing each for approximately seven seconds.

7.6. Setting the Clock and Alarm

  1. Setting Time: With the radio off, press and hold the FREQ/TIME button. Use the TUNING Arrows to set the hour, then press FREQ/TIME again to set the minutes. Press FREQ/TIME to confirm.
  2. 12/24 Hour Format: Press the 12/24 button to switch between 12-hour (AM/PM) and 24-hour formats.
  3. Setting Alarm: With the radio off, press and hold the ALARM button. Use the TUNING Arrows to set the alarm time, then press ALARM to confirm. Press ALARM again to activate or deactivate the alarm (an alarm icon will appear on the display when active). The alarm features a repeating beep tone that increases in volume over 1 minute.

7.7. Sleep Timer

The sleep timer allows the radio to turn off automatically after a set period. Press the SLEEP button (if available, or a combination with POWER) repeatedly to cycle through available sleep times (e.g., 15, 30, 60, 90 minutes).

7.8. Dual Time Display

Press the DUAL TIME button to activate a second time display, useful for tracking a different time zone. Follow the on-screen prompts or manual instructions to set the dual time.

8. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the radio with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace all batteries when the low battery indicator appears or when performance degrades.
  • Storage: If storing the radio for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage. Store in a cool, dry place.
