Kensington MicroSaver Keyed Laptop Lock (K64068F) - Instruction Manual

Model: K64068F

Introduction

The Kensington MicroSaver Keyed Laptop Lock (Model K64068F) is designed to deter theft of your valuable electronic devices. This security solution utilizes a patented T-bar locking mechanism and a robust carbon tempered steel cable to secure your notebook, flat panel monitor, desktop PC, projector, printer, docking station, tablet PC, or other compatible devices equipped with a standard Kensington security slot. The lock provides a physical barrier to prevent quick grab-and-run theft, helping to protect both your hardware and the sensitive information stored on it.

Please note: This is an older, discontinued version of the MicroSaver lock. Compatibility with newer devices, especially those released after 2016, may be limited due to changes in security slot designs (e.g., Noble lock slots). No warranty is available for this specific discontinued model.

Setup

Follow these steps to properly set up your Kensington MicroSaver Keyed Laptop Lock:

  1. Identify the Security Slot: Locate the Kensington security slot on your device. This is typically a small, rectangular slot, often marked with a lock icon.
  2. Insert the Lock Head: Insert the T-bar lock head into the security slot. Ensure it is fully seated.
  3. Rotate to Secure: Once inserted, turn the key 90 degrees clockwise to engage the T-bar mechanism, securing the lock head within the slot. Remove the key.
  4. Anchor the Cable: Loop the 6-foot (1.83 meter) steel cable around a secure, immovable object, such as a heavy desk leg or a fixed anchor point.
  5. Pass Lock Head Through Loop: Pass the lock head through the loop formed by the cable. Pull the cable taut to minimize slack.

Operating the Lock

The MicroSaver lock is designed for straightforward operation:

  • Locking: After inserting the T-bar lock head into the security slot and anchoring the cable, insert one of the provided keys into the lock cylinder. Turn the key 90 degrees clockwise until you feel a click. This engages the internal mechanism, securing the lock. Remove the key and store it in a safe place.
  • Unlocking: To unlock, insert the correct key into the lock cylinder. Turn the key 90 degrees counter-clockwise. The T-bar mechanism will disengage, allowing you to remove the lock head from the security slot.

Two keys are included with your lock. It is recommended to keep one key in a secure, accessible location and the other as a backup.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and proper function of your Kensington MicroSaver Keyed Laptop Lock, consider the following maintenance tips:

  • Keep Clean: Periodically wipe the lock head and cable with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Lubrication: If the lock mechanism becomes stiff, a small amount of graphite lubricant (available at hardware stores) can be applied to the keyhole. Do not use oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt.
  • Cable Care: Avoid kinking or excessively bending the steel cable, as this can weaken its integrity over time.
  • Key Storage: Always keep your keys in a safe and memorable location. Losing both keys will prevent you from unlocking the device.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Kensington MicroSaver Keyed Laptop Lock, consider the following:

  • Lock Head Not Inserting:
    • Ensure the security slot on your device is a standard Kensington slot. This older model (K64068F) may not be compatible with newer, smaller security slots such as the Noble lock slot found on some 2016 and newer Dell laptops (including Inspiron, Latitude, Venue, XPS, and Chromebook 13 models).
    • Check for any obstructions or debris within the security slot.
    • Ensure the T-bar mechanism is in the unlocked position before attempting to insert.
  • Lock Mechanism Stiff or Jammed:
    • Apply a small amount of graphite lubricant to the keyhole.
    • Ensure you are using the correct key.
    • Avoid forcing the key or mechanism, as this can cause damage.
  • Laptop Damage Risk: While the lock secures your device, excessive force applied to the laptop while it is locked down (e.g., attempting to close the screen too hard if the lock is positioned incorrectly) can potentially damage the laptop's casing or screen. Always handle the locked device with care.
