The TM3402 has the following ports available on the back of the modem.
  • TEL 1 / TEL 2 – Connects to home telephone wiring and to conventional telephones or fax machines.Note: If you only have one phone line, connect your telephone wiring into TEL 1.
  • Reset – Use this button in the unlikely event that you want to restore the default factory settings. This button is recessed to prevent accidental resets of your modem.
  • Ethernet – Provides internet access to a single device. Only one port is active at a time.
  • Cable – Connect your coaxial cable line to this port.
  • Power – Connect the supplied power cord to this port.

For modems with four Ethernet ports, only plug devices into Ethernet port 1 because only one port is active and additional devices plugged into the other ports will not receive Internet access. For modems with a sticker covering up the extra ports, use the accessible port only. Do not remove the sticker.

    Question

Why is my Arris TM3402A modem dropping the internet connection to my TV, printer, and other devices?

    Answer

To resolve the intermittent connection drops on your Arris TM3402, please follow these troubleshooting steps based on the manual:

    • Check the Status Lights: Look at the front of the modem. The Power, US/DS, and Online indicators should all be solid. If the US/DS light is flashing or the Online light is off, the modem has lost its connection to the service provider.
    • Verify Physical Connections: Ensure the coaxial cable (Cable port) is screwed tightly into both the modem and the wall outlet. Loose cables are a common cause of intermittent drops.
    • Power Cycle the Modem: Unplug the power cord from the back of the modem, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. This allows the device to re-establish a fresh connection with your service provider.
    • Check Ethernet Ports: Note that the TM3402 typically only supports one active Ethernet port at a time. If you have multiple devices plugged directly into the back of the modem, only one will receive internet. For multiple devices (like your TV and printer), the modem should be connected to a separate Wi-Fi router.
    • Factory Reset: If the issues persist, you can use a pin to press the recessed Reset button on the back of the modem. Hold it for at least 10 seconds to restore factory settings.

Since your original provider was sold, you may need to contact your current internet service provider to ensure the modem is correctly provisioned on their new network, as signal levels may have changed.
