FAQ’S

How can I use my Echo Show 8 Gen2 to make and receive calls?

You can call any of your contacts by saying, “Alexa, call [contact name].” You can also contact any of your mobile phone contacts by saying, “Alexa, call [contact name] on [phone number].” The Echo Show 8 Gen2 will connect to your mobile phone over Wi-Fi.

Can I use my Echo Show 8 Gen2 to make video calls?

Yes. You can make video calls to anyone who has an Echo Show or the Alexa App on their mobile device or tablet. To start a video call, say “Alexa, start a video call” or “Alexa, start a video call with [contact name].” For more information about making video calls on the Echo Show 8 Gen2 and using the Alexa App on your mobile device or tablet, see the Amazon Alexa app Help page.

What if I don’t have a Wi-Fi network?

Your Echo Show 8 Gen2 includes a built-in speaker so you can listen to music and other audio content without connecting it to a Wi-Fi network. To listen through the speaker instead of connecting it to a Wi-Fi network, go to Settings > Device Options > Audio Options > Speaker Mode > Speaker Only (no Wi-Fi). You can also connect an audio cable from the 3.5 mm jack on the back of your Echo Show 8 Gen2 to an external speaker or audio system. For more information about connecting external speakers and audio systems to your Echo devices, Connecting External Speakers and Audio Systems.

How do I use my Echo Show 8 Gen2 as an intercom?

To use your intercom feature, say “Alexa” followed by “drop in on [contact name]” or “drop in on all [contact name] devices.” For more information about using intercoms with your Echo devices, see Using Intercoms.

How do I set up my intercoms?

To set up intercoms for each of your contacts who have an Echo device with Alexa or the Alexa App installed on their mobile device or tablet, go to Settings > Calling > Intercoms and select Add New Contact when prompted. For more information about setting up intercoms for each of your contacts who have an Echo device with Alexa.

What is the difference between Echo Show 2nd Generation and Echo Show 8?

The second-gen Show 8 uses the newer, faster MediaTek MT8183 processor, compared to the MediaTek MT8163 chip found in the original Echo Show 8. This means the smart display should be smoother when swiping through settings or using Alexa, however in real life it’s unlikely you will notice the tiny difference.

Does Echo Show 8 have camera?

The Echo Show 8 does have a 13MP camera with a built-in shutter button for privacy (the same goes for the four microphones), plus two-inch speakers.

Can you FaceTime with Echo Show 8?

No, you can’t FaceTime on an Echo Show. FaceTime is Apple’s proprietary video chat app which only runs on Apple devices. Echo Show devices can only place video calls to other Echo Show devices and the Alexa phone app, and only Apple devices can FaceTime.

Does Echo Show 8 2nd Gen have Bluetooth?

The negative change comes with the removal of the 3.5mm audio jack, which would have previously allowed you to connect your Echo Show to a different (presumably stronger) set of speakers. You can still connect to an external speaker via Bluetooth, but this is undeniably a downgrade.

Can Alexa answer my home phone?

Yes, Alexa can answer phone calls from callers who have a compatible Echo device or Alexa Calling on the app. However, Alexa cannot answer calls from mobile or landline numbers.

How do I reset Echo 8 2nd gen?

Reset Your Echo Show
Press and hold the Mute and Volume Down buttons until you see the Amazon logo (about 15 seconds).
When prompted, follow the on-screen instructions to set up your device.

Why has my Echo Show stopped working?

If Echo Show is connected but not responding, check if the microphone was accidentally turned off. If it is on, see if the volume levels are not set too low. If Echo Show still does not respond, resetting the device should fix the issue.

What is the purpose of the port located next to the main power supply on the Amazon Echo Show 8 Gen 2?

    Answer

On the Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd Generation), the port located next to the main power input is a Micro-USB port. This port is intended for service and maintenance use by technicians and is not designed for consumer use, such as charging devices or data transfer.

Please note that unlike the 1st Generation Echo Show 8, the 2nd Generation model does not include a 3.5mm audio output jack; it only features the power port and the service-only Micro-USB port.

    Question

How do I set up video calling on an Echo Show 8 for a family member who does not have a mobile phone?

    Answer

To set up video calling for your father on an Echo Show 8 without him having a mobile phone, you can use a feature often referred to as 'Alexa Communication for Kids or Seniors' or simply manage his device under your own account or a separate Amazon account using your own mobile number for verification.

Follow these steps to facilitate the setup:

    • Account Setup: Since your father does not have a mobile phone, you can create a new Amazon account for him using an email address. When the Alexa App asks for a mobile number to verify the account for communication, you may need to use a secondary number or your own (though using your own for two accounts can be tricky).
    • Device Registration: Plug in the Echo Show 8 and follow the on-screen instructions to connect it to his Wi-Fi. Log in using the Amazon account you created for him.
    • Enable Communications: In your Alexa App (on your phone), go to More > Settings > Communication. Ensure that calling and messaging are enabled.
    • Contacts: Add yourself as a contact in his account and add him as a contact in yours. You can do this via the Communicate tab in the Alexa App.
    • Drop In (Optional): For a non-technical user, you may want to enable 'Drop In' for your specific contact. This allows you to instantly connect to his Echo Show without him needing to manually 'answer' the call. This is managed under Devices > Echo & Alexa > [Device Name] > Communications > Drop In.

Once configured, you can say 'Alexa, call Dad' from your app or device, and he can say 'Alexa, call [Your Name]' to start a video conference.

  7. I have found nothing on downloading apps. She says no and when I bought it they said yes. Going on a year trying to do all it said it would do. Sorry I gave up my previous one. I’m beyond angry.

    Question

How do I download apps on the Amazon Echo Show 8 Gen 2?

    Answer

The Amazon Echo Show 8 does not use a traditional app store like a smartphone or tablet. Instead of downloading and installing apps, the device uses Skills and built-in services.

    • Skills: To add new functionality, you must enable "Skills" via the Amazon Alexa app on your mobile phone or by saying, "Alexa, open the Skill Store."
    • Video Services: For streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, or Prime Video, swipe down from the top of the screen, select Video, and choose the service you wish to use. You may need to log in with your account credentials.
    • Web Browser: If a specific app is not available as a Skill, you can access many services by saying, "Alexa, open Silk" or "Alexa, open Firefox" to use the built-in web browser.

If you were told the device supports specific apps, they are likely integrated as Skills that need to be enabled in the Alexa mobile app under More > Skills & Games.
