Support for Amazon Tap
Get help using and troubleshooting common issues with Amazon Tap.
Getting Started:
Download the Alexa App
Download and install the Alexa app from your mobile device app store. Add the Alexa widget for easy home screen access.
- Open the app store on your mobile device.
- Search for Amazon Alexa app.
- Select Install.
- Select Open and sign in with your Amazon Account.
- Install Alexa widgets (optional).
Set Up Your Amazon Tap
Use the Alexa app to set up your Amazon Tap.
- Open the Alexa app

- Open More
and select Add a Device.
- Select Amazon Echo, and then select Amazon Tap.
- Follow the instructions to set up your device.
Device Settings and Features:
Connect Your Amazon Tap to Wi-Fi
To stream audio and talk to Alexa, connect your Amazon Tap to Wi-Fi.
- Open the Alexa app

- Select Devices
.
- Select Echo & Alexa, and then select your Amazon Tap.
- Select Change next to Wi-Fi Network.
- Press and hold the Wi-Fi / Bluetooth button on your Amazon Tap. Wait until the indicator turns orange and your Wi-Fi network appears in the app (about 25 seconds).
- Select Connect. If your network does not appear, select Add a Network or Rescan.
Connect Your Amazon Tap to a Wi-Fi Hotspot
If you’re not near your home Wi-Fi network, connect your Amazon Tap to a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Go to the settings menu on your phone, and search for a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Copy the network name and hotspot password.
- Open the Alexa app

- Select Devices
.
- Select Echo & Alexa, and then select your Amazon Tap.
- Select Change next to Wi-Fi Network. Choose from a list of available Wi-Fi networks.
- Scroll down and select Use this device as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Select Start, and then enter the network name and password and select Connect.
- Go to your phone’s settings menu, and turn on your Wi-Fi hotspot.
Connect Your Phone to Amazon Tap
To stream audio from your phone, connect it to Amazon Tap.
- Put your phone in Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Press the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth button on your Amazon Tap. Alexa lets you know when Amazon Tap is ready to pair.
- Open the Bluetooth settings menu on your phone, and select Amazon Tap.
Remove Paired Bluetooth Devices from Amazon Tap
To remove paired Bluetooth devices from Amazon Tap, use the Alexa app.
- Open the Alexa app

- Select Devices
.
- Select your Amazon Tap.
- Select Bluetooth Devices, and then select Clear.
Turn On Hands-Free Mode for Amazon Tap
Enable hands-free mode to use Amazon Tap with a wake word.
- Open the Alexa app
.
- Select Devices
.
- Select Echo & Alexa, and then select your Amazon Tap.
- Select Hands-Free Mode to toggle to the hands-free feature.
Troubleshooting:
Amazon Tap Doesn’t Respond to Requests
Amazon Tap doesn’t turn on or respond to your commands.
- Make sure that you’re using the included power adapter. Other adapters do not provide enough power for Amazon Tap to turn on and work correctly.
- Check that your device is connected wirelessly. If your signal is poor, try restarting your modem and router.
- Turn your device off and back on again. Press and hold the power button until it dims (about 5 seconds). Then press the power button again.
- If your Amazon Tap is still unresponsive, reset your device.
Amazon Tap Isn’t Pairing with Your Phone
If Amazon Tap is not pairing with your phone, check that the battery is charged.
- Turn your device off and back on again. Press and hold the Power button until it dims (about 5 seconds). Then press the Power button again.
- Check that Amazon Tap is charged. Low battery can cause issues with Bluetooth connectivity.
- Move your phone closer to the Amazon Tap to reduce interference.
- Use the Alexa app to clear your Bluetooth connections. Then, pair your phone to Amazon Tap again.
Reset Your Amazon Tap
If your Amazon Tap is unresponsive, or you want to erase your device settings, factory reset your device.
- Press and hold the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth button and Previous button until the light indicators turn orange, then blue (about 12 seconds).
- Wait for the light indicators to turn orange. Use the Alexa app to set up your Amazon Tap.
Deregister Your Device
If you no longer wish to use your device, you can deregister it from your Amazon account.
If you would like to give your device as a gift or wish to register the device under a different account, you will need to deregister the device from your account.
To deregister your device:
- Go to Manage Your Content and Devices and log in to your account.
- Click Devices.
- Select your device and click Deregister.
