Using Your Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser
Learn how to get the most out of your Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser.
Variable Dispensing
With variable dispensing, the amount of soap that dispenses depends on how far your hand is from the nozzle. There are three soap dispensing levels. The closer your hand is to the nozzle, the less soap dispenses. When your hand is lower and farther away from the nozzle, more soap dispenses.
Turn On High Dispensing Mode
If you want more soap within each level of variable dispensing, turn on high dispensing mode. Before you can turn on high dispensing mode, you must complete setup of your device in the Alexa app. See Set Up Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser. To turn on high dispensing mode, double press the power button.
20-Second Timer
Your Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser has a 20-second timer that lights up as you wash your hands for the CDC recommended minimum amount of time.
Create a Routine
Connect your Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser with a nearby compatible Echo device and create an Alexa Routine. With a Routine, your Echo plays songs, jokes, or a snippet of the news while you wash your hands.
Instructions for how to create a Routine are available here.
Moving and Filling
To prevent accidental dispenses, power off the device before you refill it with soap, pick it up, or move it. When refilling your device with soap, prime the pump by moving your hand under the dispensing nozzle, then removing it. Repeat multiple times until soap dispenses.

Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser isn’t Working
Try these steps to fix, unclog or troubleshoot your Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser.
- Prime the dispenser after filling the device with soap. To prime, place your hand under the sensor for a moment, then remove it. Repeat multiple times until soap dispenses.
- Only use liquid soap in your Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser. Soap dispensing won’t work properly with other types of soap, such as foaming soap or alcohol-based liquids like hand sanitizer.
- Clear any soap that may be blocking the nozzle by wiping the sensor at the base of the nozzle.
- Try a soft reset, by pressing power button for 12 seconds and then power on the device.
- If your soap dispenser isn’t used for a prolonged time, soap can accumulate and clog the nozzle. To troubleshoot, clean the nozzle area with water and remove any stuck soap.
- Dispense several times until soap starts coming out normally.

If your Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser isn’t responding to a routine:
- Confirm the “pause routine” touch button

- Confirm that the routine is enabled and connected to the correct Echo device. To confirm, open the Alexa app, go to More > Routines and select your handwashing routine. Confirm that the routine is enabled.
- If you don’t see a handwashing routine, set one up. Open the Alexa app, and select Devices > All Devices > Soap Dispenser > Set up new routine. During initial routine set up, make sure you select Enable to save your routine.
- Confirm that the selected Echo device is connected to Wi-Fi and responding to normal requests.
- Make sure you don’t have multiple routines with the same name. If there’s an existing routine with the same name, the original routine will trigger instead of the new handwashing routine. Try disabling the original routine or renaming the routine for your Amazon Smart Soap Dispenser.
