4. Setup Guide

4.1 Safety Precautions

  • Always disconnect the power supply before installing or removing any components.
  • Wear an anti-static wrist strap to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage.
  • Handle the motherboard by its edges to avoid touching sensitive components.

4.2 Component Installation

  1. CPU Installation (LGA1150):
    a. Open the CPU socket lever.
    b. Carefully align the CPU with the socket, ensuring the golden triangle on the CPU matches the triangle on the socket.
    c. Gently place the CPU into the socket. Do not force it.
    d. Close the lever to secure the CPU.
  2. RAM Installation (DDR3):
    a. Open the clips on both ends of the DIMM slot.
    b. Align the memory module with the slot, ensuring the notch on the module matches the key in the slot.
    c. Press down firmly on both ends of the memory module until the clips snap into place.
  3. Storage Device Installation (SATA & M.2):
    a. For SATA drives, connect one end of the SATA data cable to a SATA port on the motherboard and the other end to your storage drive. Connect the SATA power cable from your power supply to the drive.
    b. For M.2 SSDs (2280 form factor), locate the M.2 slot. Insert the M.2 SSD into the slot at an angle, then gently push it down and secure it with the provided screw.
  4. Expansion Card Installation (PCIe & PCI):
    a. Locate the desired PCIe x16 or PCI slot.
    b. Align the expansion card with the slot and press down firmly until it is fully seated.
    c. Secure the card with a screw to the chassis.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 First Boot and BIOS/UEFI Access

  1. After all components are installed and connected, connect the power cord and turn on the power supply.
  2. Press the power button on your chassis.
  3. During the boot process, repeatedly press the designated key (usually DEL, F2, or F10) to enter the BIOS/UEFI setup utility. Consult your system's documentation or on-screen prompts for the exact key.

5.2 BIOS/UEFI Configuration

  • Boot Order: Configure the boot order to prioritize your operating system installation media (USB drive, DVD-ROM) or primary storage drive.
  • System Time/Date: Set the correct system time and date.
  • SATA Mode: Ensure the SATA mode (AHCI, RAID) is correctly configured based on your storage setup. This motherboard supports RAID 0.
  • Save & Exit: After making changes, save your settings and exit the BIOS/UEFI.

5.3 Operating System Installation

Follow the instructions provided with your chosen operating system (e.g., Windows Server, Linux distribution) to complete the installation process. Ensure all necessary drivers for the motherboard components (chipset, LAN, audio, etc.) are installed after the OS is set up.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning

  • Regularly clean dust from the motherboard and other components using compressed air.
  • Ensure the system is powered off and unplugged before cleaning.
  • Avoid using liquid cleaners directly on components.

6.2 BIOS/Firmware Updates

Periodically check the manufacturer's website for updated BIOS/firmware versions. Updates can improve stability, compatibility, and performance. Follow the provided instructions carefully when performing updates, as incorrect procedures can damage the motherboard.

6.3 Driver Updates

Keep your system drivers (chipset, network, audio, etc.) up to date. You can usually find the latest drivers on the motherboard manufacturer's support website.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues, refer to the following common troubleshooting steps:

  • No Power: Ensure all power cables (24-pin ATX, 8-pin CPU) are securely connected. Check the power supply unit (PSU) and wall outlet.
  • No Display: Verify that the monitor is connected to the correct video output (MINI DisplayPort) and is powered on. If using a dedicated graphics card, ensure it is properly seated and powered.
  • System Fails to Boot: Check the boot order in BIOS/UEFI. Ensure the operating system drive is detected and functional. Re-seat RAM modules and expansion cards.
  • Component Not Recognized: Power off the system, unplug it, and re-seat the problematic component (RAM, GPU, M.2 SSD, SATA drive). Check all connections.
  • Overheating: Ensure CPU cooler is properly installed and making good contact. Check case fans for proper airflow. Clean dust from heatsinks.

8. User Tips

  • Initial Inspection: As this is a second-hand product, thoroughly inspect all components upon arrival for any visible damage or missing parts.
  • Cooling for Server Use: For optimal performance and longevity in server applications, ensure your system has adequate cooling, especially for the CPU and chipset.
  • BIOS Optimization: Take time to explore the BIOS/UEFI settings and optimize them for your specific server workload and hardware configuration.
  • Driver Compatibility: When installing an operating system, ensure you use drivers compatible with the H87 chipset and your chosen OS version.
  • Testing Components: Before full deployment, test all installed components (CPU, RAM, storage, network ports) to ensure they are functioning correctly.
