4. Setup

4.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the device.
  2. Open the battery cover.
  3. Insert two (2) AAA 1.5V alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery cover securely.

4.2 Connecting Fiber Optic Cables

  1. Remove the dust cap from the optical port of the KLS-25M or KPM-25M.
  2. Clean the fiber optic connector end-face thoroughly using appropriate cleaning tools.
  3. Insert the fiber optic connector (SC, FC, ST, or optional LC) into the universal 2.5mm adapter port. Ensure a snug fit.
  4. For KLS-25M, connect the fiber to be tested to the output port. For KPM-25M, connect the fiber from the light source to the input port.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Powering On/Off

Press and hold the red power button (U) for approximately 2 seconds to turn the device on or off. The device features an automatic shutdown function to conserve battery life.

5.2 KPM-25M Optical Power Meter Operation

  1. Wavelength Selection: Press the λ button to cycle through the available calibrated wavelengths (850, 980, 1300, 1310, 1490, 1550, 1625 nm). Select the wavelength matching your light source.
  2. Reference Power Setting: Press the REF/dB button to set the current power reading as a reference (0 dB) for relative loss measurements. Press again to switch between absolute (dBm or μW) and relative (dB) measurements.
  3. Unit Selection: The device automatically displays power in dBm or μW.
  4. Manual Calibration: The KPM-25M supports manual calibration. Refer to the on-screen prompts or detailed manual for specific steps to adjust parameters according to test requirements.
  5. Backlight Control: Press the sun icon button to toggle the display backlight on/off.
  6. LED Lighting: Press the flashlight icon button to activate the integrated LED light.

5.3 KLS-25M Optical Light Source Operation

  1. Wavelength Selection: Press the λ button to select the desired output wavelength (e.g., 1310nm or 1550nm for single-mode).
  2. Modulation Frequency: Press the CW/HZ button to cycle through continuous wave (CW) output and modulated frequencies (270Hz, 1KHz, 2KHz).
  3. Auto Wave ID: When connected to a compatible KomShine optical power meter, the KLS-25M can transmit an Auto Wave ID signal, allowing the power meter to automatically detect and switch to the correct wavelength.
  4. Backlight Control: Press the sun icon button to toggle the display backlight on/off.
  5. LED Lighting: Press the flashlight icon button to activate the integrated LED light.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Cleaning Optical Connectors

Regular cleaning of optical connectors is crucial for accurate measurements and device longevity. Use only approved fiber optic cleaning tools and methods. Never use abrasive materials or solvents that could damage the fiber end-face.

6.2 Battery Replacement

When the low power indicator appears on the display, replace the AAA batteries promptly to ensure continuous operation and prevent data loss or inaccurate readings.

6.3 Silicone Protective Case

The removable silicone protective case helps reduce damage from collisions and drops. Ensure it is properly fitted. Clean the case periodically with a soft, damp cloth.

6.4 Storage

Store the device within the specified storage temperature range (-25°C to +70°C for KPM-25M, -70°C to +3°C for KLS-25M-S) and relative humidity (0-95% non-condensing). Always replace dust caps on optical ports when not in use.

  • No Power: Check if batteries are correctly installed and have sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
  • Inaccurate Readings: Ensure optical connectors are clean. Perform manual calibration if parameters seem off. Verify the correct wavelength is selected on the power meter.
  • "LO" Display on KPM-25M: This indicates low optical power. Check the light source, fiber connection, or if the fiber is damaged.
