Setup Instructions

  1. Attach the Barn Door: Align the barn door with the front of your standard reflector (ensure compatibility, typically Bowens mount). Securely fasten it to the reflector.
  2. Insert the Honeycomb Grid: If desired, place the honeycomb grid into the recess of the barn door. The grid should fit snugly.
  3. Insert Color Filters: Select one of the four color filters (Red, Yellow, Blue, Green). Slide the chosen filter into the designated slot on the barn door, in front of the honeycomb grid if used, or directly in front of the light source.

Operating Instructions

Using the Barn Door

The barn door features four adjustable flags. These flags can be independently moved to precisely control the shape and direction of the light beam. By closing or opening the flags, you can concentrate light on a specific area, create narrow strips of light, or prevent light spill onto unwanted areas of your scene.

Using the Honeycomb Grid

The honeycomb grid is designed to provide ultimate control over the direction of your light. When attached, it transforms your strobe head into a more specular light source, emitting a focused beam of light exactly where you aim it. This is ideal for creating dramatic, hard lighting effects and reducing lens flare.

Using the Color Filters

The kit includes four color filters (Red, Yellow, Blue, Green). These filters can be used to:

  • Add different background colors to your shots.
  • Correct the light balance in specific lighting conditions.
  • Create dramatic and artistic lighting effects.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Godox BD-04 kit, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the barn door, grid, and filters. For stubborn smudges on filters, a slightly damp microfiber cloth can be used, followed by a dry one. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the components in a clean, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep the color filters in their protective sleeves or a dedicated case to prevent scratches.
  • Handling: Handle the flags of the barn door gently to prevent bending or damage.

Troubleshooting

  • Difficulty Attaching: Ensure your flash unit's reflector has a compatible mount (e.g., Bowens mount). Check for any obstructions or misalignment.
  • Uneven Light: Verify that the barn door flags are adjusted symmetrically if an even light spread is desired. For focused light, ensure the honeycomb grid is properly seated.
  • Color Issues: Confirm the correct color filter is inserted and clean. Ensure your camera's white balance is adjusted appropriately for the colored light.

User Tips

  • Combine for Control: For ultimate light shaping, use the barn door flags in conjunction with the honeycomb grid. This allows for both broad light shaping and precise beam control.
  • Experiment with Colors: Don't be afraid to experiment with the color filters. They can dramatically change the mood and aesthetic of your photographs. Try using them as background lights or subtle accent lighting.
  • Soft vs. Hard Light: Remember that the honeycomb grid produces harder, more focused light. For softer light, remove the grid and rely on the barn door flags or other diffusers.
