Setup
Powering the Radio
The GR-88P offers several power options:
- Built-in Ni-MH Rechargeable Battery: The radio comes with a built-in 600mA Ni-MH rechargeable battery pack. This battery can be charged via the included DC 5V adapter or by using the hand-crank dynamo.
- DC 5V External Power: Connect the provided USB charging cable to the DC 5V external power socket on the back of the radio and to a compatible 5V power source (e.g., a wall adapter, not always included).
- AA Batteries: For backup power, open the battery compartment on the back and insert 3 x AA batteries (not included). Ensure correct polarity.
- Hand-Crank Dynamo: Extend the hand crank located on the side of the radio and rotate it to generate power. This charges the internal Ni-MH battery and can power the radio directly.

Antenna Setup
- For FM and Shortwave (SW) reception, fully extend the telescopic antenna located on the top-rear of the radio.
- For AM (MW) reception, the radio uses an internal ferrite bar antenna. No external antenna adjustment is typically needed, but rotating the radio itself can improve reception.

Operating Instructions
Basic Operation
- Power On/Off: Use the 'POWER SELECTOR' switch to turn the radio ON.
- Band Selection: Use the 'AM/SW1/SW2/FM' frequency selection button to choose your desired band (FM, AM, SW1, SW2).
- Tuning: The radio features coaxial slow-fast tuning knobs. Use the larger knob for rapid frequency changes and the smaller, inner knob for fine-tuning to precisely locate stations.
- Volume Control: Adjust the 'VOLUME' knob to your preferred listening level.
- Headphone Use: Plug 3.5mm headphones into the headphone socket on the back of the radio for private listening.

Flashlight Operation
To activate the flashlight, use the 'FLASH LIGHT' selector switch located on the front panel. Toggle it ON/OFF as needed.
Hand-Crank Power Generation
When external power or AA batteries are unavailable or depleted, the hand-crank dynamo can be used:
- Extend the hand crank from the side of the radio.
- Rotate the crank clockwise or counter-clockwise at a steady pace.
- A dynamo charge indicator light will illuminate to show that power is being generated and the internal Ni-MH battery is charging.
- Continuous cranking for a few minutes can provide sufficient power for short periods of radio use or to charge the internal battery.

Maintenance
Battery Care
- AA Batteries: Replace depleted AA batteries promptly. Remove batteries if the radio will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
- Ni-MH Rechargeable Battery: To prolong the life of the built-in Ni-MH battery, it is recommended to fully discharge and recharge it periodically. Avoid leaving the battery completely depleted for long durations.
- Hand-Crank: Regularly use the hand-crank to keep the internal battery active, especially if the radio is stored for emergency use.
Cleaning
Wipe the radio with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they may damage the surface. Avoid exposing the radio to excessive moisture.
Troubleshooting
- No Power:
- Check if the 'POWER SELECTOR' is in the ON position.
- Ensure AA batteries are correctly inserted and not depleted.
- If using the internal Ni-MH battery, try charging it via the DC 5V adapter or hand-crank dynamo.
- Poor Reception:
- For FM/SW, fully extend the telescopic antenna.
- For AM (MW), try rotating the radio for better signal orientation.
- Adjust the fine-tuning knob carefully.
- Move away from electronic devices that may cause interference.
- Flashlight Not Working:
- Ensure the 'FLASH LIGHT' selector is in the ON position.
- Check if the radio has sufficient power from any source.

User Tips
- Emergency Preparedness: Keep the internal Ni-MH battery charged by periodically using the hand-crank or external adapter, even if not in regular use. Store with fresh AA batteries as a backup.
- Optimal Reception: When tuning to Shortwave (SW) bands, try to operate the radio outdoors or near a window for improved signal quality.
- Battery Longevity: Avoid completely draining the internal rechargeable battery frequently. Partial discharges and regular recharges are generally better for Ni-MH battery health.
