Brand: YUSHI TESTING

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the safe and effective use of your YUSHI TESTING Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge. This device is designed for non-destructive testing (NDT) to accurately measure the thickness of various materials, including metals, plastics, ceramics, and glass, where the material allows ultrasonic waves to propagate at a constant velocity. Please read this manual thoroughly before operating the instrument.

2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury and damage to the instrument:

  • Do not attempt to open or modify the instrument. Refer all servicing to qualified personnel.
  • Ensure the probe is clean and free from damage before each use.
  • Use only the specified couplant for measurements. Do not use flammable or corrosive liquids.
  • Avoid exposing the instrument to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.
  • Remove batteries if the instrument will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
  • Keep the instrument away from strong magnetic fields.

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Checking Contents

Upon receiving your Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge, carefully unpack all components and verify against the packing list. The standard configuration typically includes:

  • Main Instrument Unit
  • Ultrasonic Probe
  • Couplant Bottle
  • AA Alkaline Batteries (5-size)
  • Operation Manual and other documentation
  • ABS Instrument Carrying Case

3.2 Battery Installation

Locate the battery compartment on the back of the main unit. Insert the AA alkaline batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment. Close the battery cover securely.

3.3 Probe Connection

Connect the ultrasonic probe cable to the designated ports on the top of the main instrument unit. Ensure a firm and secure connection. Some models may have two ports for dual-element probes.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Powering On/Off

Press the ON/RST button to power on the device. To power off, press and hold the ON/RST button for a few seconds, or the device may automatically shut off after a period of inactivity to conserve battery life.

4.2 Basic Measurement

  1. Ensure the surface of the material to be measured is clean and smooth.
  2. Apply a small amount of ultrasonic couplant to the surface where the measurement will be taken.
  3. Place the probe firmly and flatly onto the couplant-covered surface.
  4. The thickness reading will appear on the display. Adjust the probe position slightly if the reading is unstable.

This image provides a detailed look at the UM-2 gauge's interface, featuring a digital display showing a measurement of '0.300 in', and clearly visible control buttons for Velocity (VEL), Memory (MEM), Calibration (CAL), Power On/Reset (ON/RST), Menu (MENU), and directional arrows. The ultrasonic probe is connected to the top of the device.

4.3 Calibration

Calibration is crucial for accurate measurements. Use a known thickness sample (often included or integrated into the gauge) for calibration.

  1. Apply couplant to the calibration block.
  2. Press the CAL button.
  3. Place the probe on the calibration block.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to adjust the reading to match the known thickness of the block.
  5. Confirm calibration.

4.4 Unit Selection

To switch between measurement units (e.g., inches 'in' or millimeters 'mm'), navigate through the menu using the MENU button and arrow keys. Select the desired unit and confirm.

4.5 Velocity Adjustment (VEL)

The speed of sound (velocity) varies in different materials. To measure different materials accurately, you may need to adjust the sound velocity setting. Press the VEL button and use the arrow keys to input the correct sound velocity for the material being tested. Refer to material velocity tables if needed.

4.6 Memory Functions (MEM)

The MEM button allows you to save and recall measurement data. Consult the specific model's manual for detailed instructions on saving, viewing, and deleting stored readings.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

  • After each use, wipe the probe and the instrument's surface with a soft, dry cloth to remove any couplant residue or dirt.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents that could damage the display or casing.

5.2 Storage

Store the instrument in its protective ABS carrying case when not in use. Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

5.3 Probe Care

Handle the probe with care. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to harsh impacts. Ensure the probe's contact surface remains smooth and free from scratches, as this can affect measurement accuracy.

5.4 Battery Replacement

Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Always use new, high-quality alkaline batteries of the specified type (AA 5-size).

6. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
No display/Instrument won't turn on Dead or incorrectly installed batteries Check battery polarity, replace with new batteries.
Unstable or '0.000' reading Insufficient couplant, poor probe contact, incorrect velocity setting, or rough surface. Apply more couplant, ensure firm and flat probe contact, verify material velocity, prepare surface.
Inaccurate readings Improper calibration, incorrect sound velocity, or damaged probe. Perform calibration, adjust sound velocity, inspect probe for wear.
Probe not recognized Loose probe connection or damaged cable. Ensure probe cable is securely connected. Check cable for damage.

If problems persist, contact customer support.

7. Specifications

Please note that specific specifications may vary slightly between models (MT150, MT160, MT180, MT190, MT200, MT600, UM-2). Refer to the product packaging or specific model documentation for precise details.

  • Accuracy: ±(0.5%H+0.05)mm
  • Resolution: 0.01mm or 0.1mm (selectable)
  • Sound Velocity Range: 1000 to 9999 m/s
  • Display: LCD with backlight
  • Operating Temperature: 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F)
  • Power Supply: 2 x AA Alkaline Batteries
  • Dimensions: Approximately 150mm x 74mm x 32mm
  • Weight: Approximately 245g (including batteries)

8. User Tips

  • Surface Preparation: For best results, ensure the measurement surface is as smooth as possible. Remove any paint, rust, or debris.
  • Couplant Application: Use just enough couplant to fill the air gap between the probe and the material. Too much couplant can lead to inaccurate readings.
  • Consistent Pressure: Apply consistent, moderate pressure when placing the probe on the surface to ensure good acoustic coupling.
  • Calibration Frequency: Calibrate the gauge regularly, especially when changing materials, probes, or if you suspect accuracy issues.
  • Battery Life: Always carry spare batteries, especially for fieldwork, as battery life can vary with usage and temperature.
