5. Setup
5.1 Initial Charging
Before the first wireless use, please fully charge your SMC-PAD POCKET for optimal battery performance. Connect the included USB Type-C cable to the device's USB-C port and the other end to a standard USB power adapter (not included) or a computer's USB port. The power indicator will be red during charging and turn green when fully charged.
5.2 Powering On/Off
Locate the power switch on the side of the device. Slide the switch to the 'ON' position to power on the controller. Slide it to the 'OFF' position to power it off.
5.3 Wired Connection (USB-C)
To connect the SMC-PAD POCKET via a wired connection, use the provided USB Type-C cable. Connect one end to the controller's USB-C port and the other end to a USB port on your computer or compatible device. The device will be recognized as a standard MIDI controller and will also charge simultaneously.
5.4 Wireless Connection (Bluetooth MIDI)
The SMC-PAD POCKET supports Bluetooth MIDI for wireless operation.
- For macOS and iOS devices: Bluetooth MIDI is natively supported. Go to your device's Bluetooth settings, find the SMC-PAD POCKET, and pair it.
- For Windows PCs: You may need to download a free utility called “BT MIDI Connector” from the official M-VAVE website to enable Bluetooth MIDI functionality. Refer to the user guide or the QR code on the device for download instructions.
- For Android devices: Bluetooth MIDI support varies by device and Android version. Ensure your device supports Bluetooth MIDI and follow its specific pairing instructions.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Basic Pad Operation
The 16 RGB pads are designed for expressive input. They respond to how hard you strike them (velocity sensitivity) and how long you press them after the initial strike (aftertouch). This allows for dynamic control over instrument volume, filter cutoff, or other assignable parameters in your music software.
6.2 Note Repeat Function
The SMC-PAD POCKET includes an intelligent note repeat function, similar to an arpeggiator. This feature allows you to automatically repeat notes or drum hits at a specified rate, with adjustable swing and synchronization to your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)'s tempo. Consult the M-VAVE MIDI Suite software for detailed configuration of this feature.
6.3 Software Customization (M-VAVE MIDI Suite)
For advanced customization of your SMC-PAD POCKET, download and install the “M-VAVE MIDI Suite” desktop software (available for Windows and Mac). This software allows you to:
- Change individual pad assignments (MIDI Note, CC, Program Change).
- Adjust MIDI channels for each pad.
- Customize RGB pad colors.
- Configure note repeat settings (rate, swing, sync).
- Update firmware (if available).
Basic MIDI note output will function without the software, but customization requires it.
6.4 Important Note on Audio Output
The M-VAVE SMC-PAD POCKET is a MIDI controller. It sends control data (MIDI messages) to your computer, tablet, or smartphone. It does NOT produce any sound on its own. You will need to connect it to a device running music software (DAW, virtual instrument, etc.) to hear sound.
7. User Tips
- Maximize Customization: Don't forget to download the M-VAVE MIDI Suite software. It unlocks the full potential of your controller, allowing you to tailor pad functions and colors to your specific workflow.
- Portable Power Management: For extended sessions on the go, consider carrying a small power bank to recharge the SMC-PAD POCKET via its USB-C port.
- Experiment with Aftertouch: Aftertouch can add significant expression to your performances. Experiment with assigning it to parameters like vibrato, filter sweeps, or effects sends in your DAW.
8. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the surface of the device. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or waxes.
- Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Avoid Liquids: Keep the device away from water and other liquids to prevent damage to internal components.
- Handle with Care: Avoid dropping the device or subjecting it to strong impacts, as this can damage the pads or internal circuitry.
9. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not power on. | Battery is depleted. Power switch is off. | Charge the device using the USB-C cable. Ensure the power switch is in the 'ON' position. |
| Pads are not responding in software. | Not connected properly. MIDI input not enabled in software. Incorrect MIDI channel. | Check USB-C cable connection or Bluetooth pairing. Ensure the SMC-PAD POCKET is selected as a MIDI input device in your DAW/software. Verify MIDI channel settings using M-VAVE MIDI Suite. |
| No sound when pressing pads. | MIDI controller does not produce sound. Software instrument not loaded or armed. | The SMC-PAD POCKET sends MIDI data, not audio. Ensure you have a virtual instrument or sound module loaded and armed to receive MIDI input in your music software. Check your software's audio output settings. |
| Bluetooth MIDI not connecting on Windows. | Windows lacks native Bluetooth MIDI support. | Download and install the "BT MIDI Connector" utility from the official M-VAVE website. |
| Pads are not lighting up or showing incorrect colors. | Customization settings. Low battery. | Check pad color settings in the M-VAVE MIDI Suite software. Ensure the device is sufficiently charged. |
