Setup
Spool Options
The Spartacus III reel offers three interchangeable spool options to suit various fishing scenarios:
- Universal Spool (8g): Covers most local fish species and fishing scenarios. Lure weight range: 3-21g.
- Competition Spool (8.3g, sold separately): Ideal for river finesse fishing with micro lures, wild mandarin fish/perch, and other pressured fish. Lure weight range: 3-12g.
- Heavy-Duty Spool (7.5g, sold separately): Designed for heavy cover punching, power frog fishing, and long-distance casting for big fish with strong, heavy lines. Lure weight range: 3-30g.
How to Spool a Baitcaster
- **Attach the reel to a rod:** Secure the reel firmly to the reel seat on your fishing rod.
- **Thread the line through the rod guides:** Starting from the tip of the rod, carefully thread your fishing line through all the rod guides, working your way down to the reel.
- **Tie the line to the spool:** Use an arbor knot or a simple overhand knot to securely fasten the line to the spool. Ensure the knot is tight to prevent slippage.
- **Begin spooling:** Hold the line under light tension with your non-reeling hand. Begin to reel slowly and steadily, ensuring the line lays evenly across the spool. Avoid overfilling the spool; leave approximately 1/8 inch from the edge of the spool.
How to Set the Drag on a Baitcaster
- **Attach a scale:** Tie your fishing line to a fishing scale.
- **Pull the line:** Pull the line directly away from the reel.
- **Adjust the drag star:** Turn the drag star (located next to the handle) clockwise to increase drag tension, and counter-clockwise to decrease it.
- **Target drag:** Set the drag to approximately 25% of your line's breaking strength. For example, if you are using 10lb test line, set the drag to 2.5lbs. This setting allows the line to slip before breaking under excessive pressure.
Operating Your Reel
How to Cast a Baitcaster
- **Adjust the braking system:**
- **Centrifugal Brake:** Open the side plate and adjust the number of brake blocks engaged. More blocks provide greater braking force, which helps reduce backlashes. Start with 2-4 blocks engaged.
- **Magnetic Brake:** Adjust the external dial. Higher numbers on the dial increase magnetic braking, slowing down the spool speed. Begin with a medium setting.
- **Spool Tension Knob:** Tighten this knob until the lure falls slowly and smoothly when the thumb bar is pressed. This adjustment is crucial for preventing the spool from overrunning.
- **Hold the rod:** Grip the rod securely with your dominant hand, ensuring your thumb rests lightly on the spool.
- **Press the thumb bar:** This action disengages the spool, allowing it to spin freely.
- **Make the cast:** Bring the rod back, then execute a smooth, forward motion. As the lure travels through the air, maintain light thumb pressure on the spool to control its speed and prevent backlashes.
- **Engage the reel:** Once the lure makes contact with the water, engage the reel by turning the handle or pressing the thumb bar again (this varies by model).
Maintenance
How to Clean a Baitcaster
- **Rinse:** After each use, especially after fishing in saltwater, lightly rinse your reel with fresh water.
- **Wipe dry:** Use a soft, clean cloth to thoroughly wipe the reel dry.
- **Lubricate:** Apply a small amount of high-quality reel oil to all moving parts, such as bearings and the worm gear. Apply a thin layer of reel grease to the main gears. Avoid excessive lubrication.
- **Store:** Store your reel in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
Troubleshooting
- Backlashes (Bird's Nest)
-
Cause: The spool is spinning faster than the line is leaving the reel.
Solution: Increase the braking force (engage more centrifugal blocks or set the magnetic brake to a higher number). Tighten the spool tension knob slightly. Practice maintaining lighter thumb pressure on the spool during casting.
- Stiff Handle/Grinding Noise
-
Cause: Accumulation of dirt, debris, or insufficient lubrication in the gears or bearings.
Solution: Thoroughly clean and lubricate the reel as described in the maintenance section. If the issue persists, professional service may be required.
- Drag Slipping/Not Holding
-
Cause: Worn drag washers or improper drag setting.
Solution: Inspect the drag washers for wear and tear. Ensure the drag is set correctly, typically around 25% of your fishing line's breaking strength. Replace worn drag washers if necessary.
User Tips
- Practice Makes Perfect: Baitcasting reels require practice to master. Start with heavier lures and gradually move to lighter ones as you gain confidence.
- Brake Adjustment: Always start with more braking force (higher settings) and gradually reduce it as you become more proficient to maximize casting distance.
- Thumb Control: Your thumb is your most important brake. Learn to feather the spool with your thumb to prevent backlashes, especially during the initial and final stages of the cast.
- Line Management: Ensure your line is properly spooled and free of twists. Periodically check your line for nicks or abrasions.
