6.2 Testing Principle (Kelvin Test)

The FY8912B utilizes the Kelvin test method, which applies a fixed frequency and small fixed current test signal to the battery. It then samples the voltage and calculates the internal resistance through an algorithm. This method offers several advantages over traditional load tests:

  • It can measure almost all battery types, including small-capacity batteries, which might not withstand the high currents of load tests.
  • This measurement method does not cause significant damage to the battery's internal electrodes, unlike high-current load tests that can induce electrode polarization and potential damage.

While internal resistance is complex and cannot solely predict battery life, a sudden increase in internal resistance or a decrease in CCA can indicate the battery is nearing its end of life.

6.3 Battery Test

This test assesses the overall health of the battery.

  1. From the Main Menu, select "1. Battery Test" and press OK.
  2. Select the battery type (e.g., Regular Batt, AGM Tablet, AGM Winding, GEL, EFB) and press OK.

9.1 Common Issues and Solutions

  • Tester does not power on:
    • Ensure the test clips are securely connected to the battery terminals.
    • Check if the battery voltage is within the operating range (8V-36V).
    • Verify that the battery terminals are clean and free of corrosion.
  • Inaccurate readings:
    • Ensure the test clips have full contact with the battery terminals (refer to Figure 5.2).
    • Make sure the battery is fully charged before performing a measurement for optimal accuracy.
    • Confirm that the correct battery type and specification (CCA/Capacity) are selected in the tester's menu.
  • "Replace Recommended" message:
    • This indicates the battery's State of Health (SOH) is below 45% or other parameters are critically low. Consider replacing the battery.
    • Ensure the battery was fully charged before testing.

10. User Tips

  • For the most accurate battery test results, always ensure the battery is fully charged before connecting the tester.
  • When performing the Starter Test or Charging System Test, follow the on-screen prompts carefully regarding engine status and RPM.
  • The Kelvin test method used by this device is non-damaging to the battery, making it safe for frequent use.
  • This tester is a valuable tool for preventing unexpected vehicle breakdowns due to battery failure. Regular checks can save time and money.
  • The CCA value measured for a new battery might be about 10% higher than the marked value, and it gradually decreases during use.
