  • **I/M Readiness:** Checks the status of the vehicle's emission-related monitoring systems. This is crucial for emissions testing. A green checkmark indicates the monitor has run and completed, while a red 'X' indicates it has not.
Screen displaying I/M Readiness status with various monitors like MIL, DTC, MIS, CCM, HCAT, AIR, O2S, EVAP, EGR, and FUE, showing their ON/OFF or checkmark/X status.
Figure 5.4: I/M Readiness status display.
  • **Data Stream:** Displays real-time data from the vehicle's sensors, such as engine RPM, vehicle speed, O2 sensor readings, and more. This helps in diagnosing intermittent problems.
  • **Battery Voltage Test:** Allows you to check the car battery's voltage. Connect the scanner to your car's diagnostic port and navigate to the battery or electrical system section. The scanner will display the battery's voltage, typically showing whether it's within a healthy range (around 12.6V when the car is off).
Screen displaying Battery Check information with a tip to start the engine for automatic battery test, and current voltage readings.

  • **O2 Sensor Test:** Retrieves O2 sensor monitor test results for the most recently completed tests from the vehicle's on-board computer.
  • **EVAP System Test (Mode $8):** Initiates a test of the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP) for leaks.
  • **Freeze Frame:** Stores a snapshot of critical sensor values at the moment a DTC was set. This data can help pinpoint the conditions under which the fault occurred.
  • **On-Board Monitoring:** Retrieves test results for emission-related powertrain components and systems that are not continuously monitored.

  • For accurate battery test results, ensure the car is off and has been off for a few minutes before performing the test.
  • When clearing fault codes, remember that this only turns off the warning light. The underlying issue must be addressed to prevent the code from reappearing.
  • Utilize the 'Data Stream' function to monitor live sensor data, which can be invaluable for diagnosing intermittent problems that don't always trigger a fault code.
  • Keep your device's software updated to ensure compatibility with the latest vehicle models and access to new features.
