5. Setup

5.1 Charging the Device

Before initial use, fully charge the spot welder. Connect the provided Type-C charging cable to the device and a 5V/2.1A (MAX) power adapter. The display will indicate charging status. Avoid using chargers with higher voltage.

5.2 Welding Needle Installation and Adjustment

The Awgem spot welder features scientific interchangeable welding needles with adjustable spacing. This design allows for precise alignment and adapts to diverse welding needs.

  1. Loosen Screws: Loosen the fixing screws of the welding pins on both sides of the device.
  2. Remove Pin: Gently remove the existing soldering pin along its direction.
  3. Install New Pins: Install the new soldering pins.
  4. Adjust Spacing: Adjust the spacing between the pins to suit your welding requirements. The device supports welding distance adjustment.
  5. Tighten Screws: Tighten the fixing screws on both sides to secure the pins.

Note: Please use a 0.118inch/3mm outer diameter cross screwdriver for disassembly and replacement. The welding pin is embedded and does not need to be removed separately. Forcefully removing the screw may cause damage to the housing.

8. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your Awgem spot welder.

  • Device not turning on: Ensure the battery is charged. Connect to a Type-C charger and check if the charging indicator lights up.
  • Weak or inconsistent welds:
    • Check battery charge level. Low battery can affect weld strength.
    • Clean the welding pins with sandpaper to remove oxidation or residue.
    • Adjust the gear setting to a higher level for stronger welds, especially for thicker materials.
    • Ensure firm and even pressure is applied to the welding pins on the nickel strip.
    • Verify that the nickel strip and battery terminals are clean.
  • Device overheating: The device has built-in temperature protection. If it overheats, it will automatically trigger protection and may shut down. Allow it to cool down before resuming use. Ensure proper ventilation during operation.
  • No welding spark:
    • Check if the device is in the correct welding mode (manual or automatic).
    • Ensure the welding pins are making good contact with the nickel strip and battery.
    • Verify that the gear setting is not too low for the material.
  • Short circuit protection activated: If a short circuit is detected, the device will activate protection. Power off the device, inspect the welding area for any conductive debris or improper contact, and resolve the issue before restarting.

9. User Tips

  • Practice First: If you are new to spot welding, practice on scrap nickel strips and old batteries to get a feel for the device and find the optimal gear settings for different materials.
  • Surface Preparation: Always ensure the surfaces to be welded (battery terminals and nickel strip) are clean and free of any dirt, grease, or oxidation. This significantly improves weld quality.
  • Consistent Pressure: Apply consistent and firm pressure on the welding pins during the welding process. Uneven pressure can lead to weak or incomplete welds.
  • Ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area to dissipate any fumes produced during welding.
  • Battery Pack Assembly: When assembling battery packs, plan your layout carefully and use appropriate battery holders or insulation to prevent accidental short circuits.
