4. Setup Instructions

4.1. Driver Installation (Crucial Step)

Before using the docking station, especially for triple display functionality, you MUST install the Silicon Motion driver. This driver is essential for the dock to function correctly with multiple monitors.

  1. Download the Driver:
Go to the official Silicon Motion website: https://www.siliconmotion.com/
Navigate to the 'Support' section, then click 'Download Center'.
Under the 'Other' filter, locate and select 'SM770 Driver Download'.
Download the appropriate driver for your operating system (Windows or macOS).
  2. Installation for Windows:
    Double-click the downloaded file (e.g., "SMIUSBDisplaySW.exe").
Follow the on-screen prompts, click "Install", and wait for the installation to complete.
    Click "Exit" when finished.
  3. Installation for macOS:
Drag the software icon to your Applications folder.
Open "System Settings" (or "System Preferences" on older macOS versions).
Go to "Privacy & Security" (or "Security & Privacy").
Grant access to the Silicon Motion Driver application for "Screen & Audio Recording". This permission is necessary for the dock to extend your display.

NOTE: Screen recording permission is ONLY for screen expansion. The driver does NOT collect any content information through this dock and software.

4.2. Power Connection

  1. Connect the included 72W DC power adapter to the "DC IN" port on the docking station. This is mandatory for the dock to function.
  2. If you wish to charge your laptop through the docking station, connect your own PD (Power Delivery) adapter (up to 100W) to the "PD IN" port on the dock. The 72W adapter included with the dock only powers the dock itself, not your laptop.

4.3. Host Connection

Connect the provided USB-C to USB-C cable from the "HOST" port on the docking station to your laptop's USB-C port. If your laptop only has USB-A ports, use the included USB-A adapter with the USB-C cable.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Triple Display Setup

The docking station supports triple 4K@60Hz extended displays. You can use any 3 of the 5 available video output ports (3x HDMI, 2x DisplayPort) to connect your monitors. Ensure your monitors are connected to the desired ports on the docking station.

6. Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your PULWTOP BD242A Docking Station, please follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Keep the device clean by wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Ensure proper ventilation around the docking station to prevent overheating.
  • Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures, humidity, or direct sunlight.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the device yourself, as this will void the warranty and may cause damage.
  • Store the docking station in a cool, dry place when not in use.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your docking station, please refer to the following common solutions:

  • No Display Output / Incorrect Display:
Ensure the Silicon Motion driver is correctly installed and has the necessary permissions (especially "Screen & Audio Recording" on macOS).
Verify that the docking station is powered by the included 72W DC adapter.
Check all HDMI/DisplayPort cables and connections between the dock and monitors.
Not all USB-C ports on the dock support video output. Ensure you are using the dedicated HDMI or DisplayPort outputs.
  • Laptop Not Charging:
The included 72W DC adapter only powers the dock. To charge your laptop, you MUST connect your own PD (Power Delivery) adapter (up to 100W) to the dock's "PD IN" port.
If using a USB-A laptop, the "PD IN" port will not function for laptop charging.
  • Peripherals Not Working:
Ensure the docking station is properly connected to your host laptop and powered on.
Try connecting the peripheral directly to your laptop to confirm it's functional.
Some high-power peripherals may require additional power or a direct connection.
  • Intermittent Connectivity:
Ensure all cables are securely connected.
Restart your laptop and the docking station.
Update your laptop's operating system and USB drivers.

8. User Tips

  • Prioritize Driver Installation: Many display issues are resolved by correctly installing the Silicon Motion driver and granting necessary permissions. Do this first!
  • Power is Key: Always ensure the dock is powered by its dedicated 72W adapter for stable operation, especially when using multiple displays or high-power peripherals.
  • Cable Management: Utilize the dual stand design to keep your workspace tidy and prevent cable clutter, which can improve airflow and reduce accidental disconnections.
