2. Safety Information

WARNING: Laser radiation can cause eye damage and skin burns. Always wear appropriate laser safety goggles when operating the machine. Never look directly into the laser beam.

  • Ensure the work area is well-ventilated to dissipate fumes and smoke generated during engraving/cutting.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Do not leave the machine unattended during operation.
  • Keep children and pets away from the operating area.
  • Ensure the machine is placed on a stable, level, and non-flammable surface.
  • Do not engrave or cut highly reflective, flammable, or unknown materials without proper precautions.

4. Setup Guide

4.1 Unpacking and Initial Placement

The Artilume U1 is designed for convenient use right out of the box, requiring minimal assembly.

  • Carefully remove the engraver from its packaging.
  • Place the machine on a stable, flat, and non-flammable surface in a well-ventilated area.
  • Ensure there is sufficient space around the machine for safe operation and material handling.

4.2 Software Installation

The Artilume U1 supports various software platforms for design and control.

For Computer (Windows/macOS/Linux):

  1. Install Driver: Connect the USB drive provided with the engraver to your computer. Open the USB drive data and navigate to the folder corresponding to your operating system (Windows or Apple/macOS) to install the necessary drivers.
  2. Install Software: Download and install your preferred engraving software. Recommended options include:
    • CutLabX: Compatible with Windows OS, macOS.
    • LightBurn: Compatible with Windows OS, macOS.
    • LaserGRBL: Compatible with Windows OS.

For Mobile Phone (Android/iOS):

  1. Download App: Download the CutLabX software from your device's app store (Google Play Store for Android, Apple App Store for iOS).

4.3 Connection Steps

Computer Connection:

  1. Ensure the drivers are installed.
  2. Connect the Artilume U1 to your computer via USB cable.
  3. Open your chosen engraving software (e.g., CutLabX, LightBurn, LaserGRBL) and follow the software's instructions to establish a connection with the engraver.

Mobile Phone Connection (via WiFi):

  1. Power on the Artilume U1.
  2. On your mobile device, open Wi-Fi settings and connect to the Wi-Fi signal broadcast by the engraver.
  3. Open the CutLabX app. The IP address should default to 192.168.0.1.
  4. Connect the machine within the app to begin creating.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Basic Operation

  • Power On/Off: Use the one-click start/stop button on the machine.
  • Offline Carving: The Artilume U1 supports offline carving. Prepare your design file on a TF card, insert it into the TF card slot, and operate the machine using its function buttons without a computer connection.
  • Function Buttons: Utilize the rich function buttons for various operations as detailed in your software's user guide.

5.2 Material Compatibility and Capabilities

The Artilume U1 is versatile, capable of engraving and cutting a wide array of materials.

  • Engravable Materials: Paper, wood chips, plastic, leather, fabric, cardboard, stone, ceramics, coated metals, glass, silicon, corrugated paper, various fabrics, rocks.
  • Cutting Capabilities:
    • 10W Laser: Can cut 5-8mm plywood and 8-10mm pine board.
    • 5W Laser: Can cut 3-5mm plywood and 5-7mm pine board.
  • Metal Engraving: While the standard diode laser (3W/7W/12W) is primarily for non-metallic materials and coated metals, metal materials can be engraved using a 1064nm laser (requires a specific laser module, not standard). The 450nm laser is mostly used for non-metallic materials.

5.3 Preparing Your Design

  • Supported Formats:
    • Image formats: JPEG, BMP, PNG, JPG
    • Vector formats: DXF, SVG
    • LightBurn also supports Ai format.
  • Create or import your design into the chosen software. Adjust parameters such as power, speed, and passes according to the material and desired effect.

5.4 Starting an Engraving/Cutting Job

  1. Place your material securely on the engraving bed.
  2. Adjust the laser focus according to the material thickness.
  3. In your software, preview the job to ensure correct placement and size.
  4. Initiate the engraving/cutting process from the software or via offline carving.
  5. Monitor the process closely and ensure proper ventilation.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Artilume U1.

  • Clean the Laser Lens: Periodically clean the laser lens with a soft, lint-free cloth and lens cleaning solution to maintain laser beam quality.
  • Clean the Fan: Ensure the cooling fan (Figure 2, item 4) is free from dust and debris to prevent overheating. Use compressed air to clear blockages.
  • Clean Guide Rails: Keep the guide rails and linear bearings clean and lubricated to ensure smooth movement of the laser module.
  • Check Connections: Regularly inspect all cables and connections for wear or damage.
  • Firmware Updates: Check the manufacturer's website or app for any available firmware updates to improve performance and add new features.

7. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Laser not firing or weak output Dirty lens, incorrect focus, low power setting, laser module issue. Clean laser lens. Adjust focus. Increase power setting in software. Contact support if laser module is faulty.
Machine not connecting to PC/App Driver not installed, incorrect WiFi connection, wrong IP address, faulty USB cable. Install/reinstall drivers. Ensure correct WiFi network (engraver's network) is selected. Verify IP address (default 192.168.0.1). Try a different USB cable.
