4. Setup and Installation

Follow these steps to install your ASRock STEEL LEGEND 1000W Power Supply:

  1. Prepare Your System: Ensure your computer is completely powered off and unplugged from the wall outlet. Open your computer case.
  2. Remove Old PSU (if applicable): Disconnect all cables from your old power supply and remove it from the case.
  3. Mount the New PSU: Carefully place the ASRock STEEL LEGEND 1000W into the PSU mounting bay of your computer case. Secure it with the provided screws. Ensure the fan is facing the correct direction for optimal airflow (usually facing down if there's a bottom vent, or up if not).
  4. Connect Modular Cables to PSU: Identify the necessary cables for your components (motherboard, CPU, graphics card(s), SATA devices, etc.). Connect these cables to the corresponding modular ports on the power supply. Refer to the diagram below for port identification.

  1. Connect Cables to Components:
    • Motherboard: Connect the 20+4 pin ATX cable to your motherboard.
    • CPU: Connect the 4+4 pin EPS CPU cable(s) to your motherboard's CPU power connector(s).
    • Graphics Card(s): Connect the 6+2 pin PCIe cable(s) or the 12+4 pin PCIe 5.1 cable to your graphics card(s). Ensure you use the correct connector type for your specific GPU.
    • Storage Devices: Connect SATA power cables to your SSDs, HDDs, and optical drives.
    • Peripherals: Connect Molex cables to any other peripherals requiring this type of power.
  2. Cable Management: Route cables neatly to improve airflow and aesthetics. The flat cables provided are designed to assist with this.
  3. Final Check: Double-check all connections to ensure they are firmly seated.

5. Operating Instructions

Once the power supply is installed and all components are connected:

  1. Connect AC Power: Plug the AC power cord into the power supply's inlet and then into a wall outlet.
  2. Power On the PSU: Locate the main power switch on the rear of the power supply and flip it to the 'ON' (I) position.

  1. Start Your Computer: Press the power button on your computer case.

iCOOL Mode

The ASRock STEEL LEGEND 1000W features an iCOOL MODE switch on the rear panel. This mode allows the fan speed to automatically adjust based on the power supply's temperature and load. When activated, the fan operates almost silently at low loads and increases speed for effective cooling under high loads. To enable or disable iCOOL MODE, toggle the switch next to the main power switch (refer to Figure 5.1).

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the power supply and its fan grille to prevent dust buildup. Use a soft, dry cloth or compressed air. Ensure the power supply is turned off and unplugged before cleaning.
  • Airflow: Ensure that the power supply's intake and exhaust vents are not obstructed. Good airflow is crucial for efficient cooling and longevity.
  • Do Not Disassemble: Never attempt to open the power supply unit. High voltages are present inside, even when unplugged, and doing so will void your warranty.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your power supply, try the following steps:

  • No Power:
    • Check if the AC power cord is securely plugged into both the power supply and the wall outlet.
    • Ensure the main power switch on the PSU's rear panel is in the 'ON' (I) position.
    • Verify that the wall outlet is functional by plugging in another device.
    • Check all modular cable connections to ensure they are firmly seated in both the PSU and the components.
  • System Shuts Down Unexpectedly:
    • The power supply's built-in protection mechanisms (OCP, OVP, OTP, OPP, UVP, SCP) may have activated due to an overload, overvoltage, overheating, or short circuit.
    • Ensure your system's power consumption does not exceed the PSU's capacity.
    • Check for proper ventilation around the PSU and inside the case to prevent overheating.
    • Disconnect non-essential peripherals to see if the issue persists.
  • Fan Not Spinning (iCOOL Mode): If iCOOL Mode is enabled, the fan may not spin at low loads to maintain silent operation. This is normal. The fan will activate as the load and temperature increase. If the fan never spins even under heavy load, ensure iCOOL Mode is enabled or try disabling it to force the fan on.

If problems persist after performing these checks, contact ASRock customer support or your retailer for assistance.

  • Cable Management: Take advantage of the fully modular design and flat cables to keep your PC interior tidy. This not only improves aesthetics but also enhances airflow, contributing to better system cooling.
  • Optimal Cooling: Ensure your PC case has good airflow and that the PSU fan is not obstructed. If your case has a bottom intake, orient the PSU with the fan facing down.
  • iCOOL Mode for Silence: If you prioritize quiet operation, especially during light tasks, ensure the iCOOL Mode is enabled. The fan will only spin up when necessary, keeping noise levels to a minimum.
  • Future-Proofing: The native PCIe 5.1 connector is designed for the latest high-power graphics cards. If you plan to upgrade your GPU in the future, this PSU is already equipped to handle it.
