5. Setup

5.1. Battery Installation

  1. Align the battery pack with the back of the radio.
  2. Slide the battery pack upwards until it clicks into place.
  3. Ensure the battery tightening screw (17) is securely fastened.

5.2. Antenna Attachment

  1. Screw the antenna (1) clockwise into the connector on top of the radio until it is finger-tight. Do not overtighten.

5.3. Charging the Battery

The UV-18H GPS radio supports both desktop charging and USB-C direct charging.

  • Desktop Charger: Place the radio into the charging base. Ensure the charging contacts align. The Type-C Charging Indicator (16) will illuminate to show charging status.
  • USB-C Direct Charging: Connect the USB-C charger cable to the Type-C Charging Port (15) on the side of the radio and to a compatible USB power source (e.g., USB wall adapter, computer, power bank, car charger). The Type-C Charging Indicator (16) will show charging status.

Note: Fully charge the battery before initial use for optimal performance.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1. Basic Operation

  • Power On/Off: Rotate the Power/Volume Knob (2) clockwise to turn on the radio. Rotate counter-clockwise until it clicks to turn off.
  • Volume Adjustment: Rotate the Power/Volume Knob (2) to adjust the listening volume.
  • PTT (Push-to-Talk) Key: Press and hold the PTT Key (11) to transmit. Release to receive.

6.2. Frequency Bands and Modes

The UV-18H GPS supports a wide range of frequencies and modes:

6.3. Channel Management

The radio supports up to 999 memory channels for storing frequencies and settings.

Refer to the on-screen menu (MENU Key (7)) for instructions on saving, recalling, and managing channels.

6.4. Wireless Frequency Copy

This feature allows you to quickly copy frequencies and sub-tones from another radio. Ensure the two radios are at least 30cm apart for accurate copying.

Press lightly to complete the frequency alignment operation. No complex settings are required, making it easy to get started.

6.5. Advanced Features

  • Dual Watch, Dual Standby: Monitor two different frequencies simultaneously.
  • Scan Modes:
    • Time Scan: Scans channels for a set period.
    • Carrier Scan: Scans channels and stops when a signal is detected.
    • Search Scan: Searches for active frequencies within a range.
  • VOX (Voice Operated Transmission): Allows hands-free operation by transmitting when it detects your voice.

  • Alarm Mode: Site/Code/Tone alarm options for emergency situations.
  • Frequency Hopping: Enhances communication security.
  • CTCSS/DCS Scan: Scans for Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System (CTCSS) or Digital-Coded Squelch (DCS) tones.
  • Roger Beep: An audible tone indicating the end of a transmission.
  • DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency): Used for signaling, including Group Call, Individual Call, and All Call functions.

7. Maintenance

7.1. General Care

  • Keep the radio dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately.
  • Do not expose the radio to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
  • Avoid dropping or subjecting the radio to strong impacts.
  • Keep the radio away from dust and dirt.
