4.2 Placement and Securing

Place the machine on a stable, level workbench or stand capable of supporting its weight (128kg). Ensure adequate clearance around the machine for safe operation and maintenance. Secure the machine to prevent movement during operation.

4.3 Electrical Connection

Connect the machine to a grounded power outlet. The machine operates on 220-240V / 50HZ / 1phase. Ensure your power supply matches these requirements. If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician.

4.4 Initial Lubrication

Before first use, ensure all moving parts, especially the ball screws and slides with oil routers, are adequately lubricated. Refer to the maintenance section for recommended lubricants and procedures.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Basic Operation

  1. Power On: Ensure the machine is properly connected to power.
  2. Emergency Stop: Familiarize yourself with the location of the red Emergency Stop switch (Figure 2). Press it immediately in case of an emergency.
  3. Start/Stop: Use the green Start button and red Stop button (Figure 2) to turn the spindle motor on and off.
  4. Speed Control: Adjust the spindle speed using the Speed Control Knob (Figure 2). The current speed will be displayed on the Speed Display (Figure 2) and the Digital Readout (DRO).
  5. Forward/Reverse: Use the Forward and Reverse Switch (Figure 2) to change the spindle rotation direction as required for different operations.
  6. Spindle Locking: Use the Spindle Locking Handle (Figure 2) to lock the spindle when changing tools or performing maintenance.

5.2 Digital Readout (DRO) Usage

The integrated 3-axis DRO provides precise real-time position feedback for the X, Y, and Z axes. Use the DRO to accurately position your workpiece and monitor cutting depths. Consult the DRO's specific manual for detailed functions such as zero setting, absolute/incremental modes, and unit conversion.

5.3 Milling and Drilling Operations

  • Workpiece Clamping: Always securely clamp your workpiece to the work table using appropriate clamps and fixtures.
  • Tool Installation: Select the correct spindle taper (MT3 or R8) and install the appropriate cutting tool (drill bit, end mill, face mill) into the spindle. Ensure the tool is properly seated and tightened.
  • Adjusting Headstock: Use the Headstock Lifting Handwheel and Headstock Locking Handle (Figure 3) to adjust and secure the headstock height.
  • Spindle Feed: Use the Spindle Feeding Handle and Spindle Micro Feed Handwheel (Figure 3) for controlled manual feeding during drilling or milling operations. The Spindle Depth Ruler DRO (Figure 3) assists in monitoring depth.
  • Axis Movement: Use the handwheels for the X, Y, and Z axes to move the work table and headstock. The ball screw system ensures smooth and precise adjustments.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and optimal performance of your WEISS VM28L DRO Milling Machine.

  • Cleaning: After each use, clean the machine thoroughly, removing all chips, dust, and debris. Use a brush or vacuum; avoid compressed air directly on sensitive components like the DRO.
  • Lubrication: Regularly lubricate all moving parts, especially the ball screws and slides. The integrated oil routers on the two slides should be checked and refilled as needed. Use high-quality machine oil as recommended by WEISS.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all screws, nuts, and bolts for tightness. Check electrical connections for wear or damage. Refer to the 'WEISS Mill Drill Test Record' (Figure 10) for a comprehensive list of inspection points.
  • Belt Drive: Inspect the tooth belt drive system (Figure 5) for wear or tension issues. Adjust or replace as necessary.
  • DRO Maintenance: Keep the DRO display and rulers clean. Avoid exposing them to excessive moisture or impact.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter any issues with your WEISS VM28L DRO Milling Machine, please refer to the following general troubleshooting steps. For complex problems, contact WEISS technical support.

  • Machine Not Starting: Check power connection, emergency stop button (ensure it's disengaged), and main power switch.
  • Spindle Not Rotating: Verify speed control setting, forward/reverse switch position, and check for any obstructions.
  • Inaccurate Cuts: Ensure workpiece is securely clamped, cutting tools are sharp and properly installed, and machine components are free from play. Calibrate DRO if necessary.
  • Unusual Noise/Vibration: Stop the machine immediately. Inspect for loose components, worn belts, or damaged bearings.
