1. Introduction

The M-VAVE SMK-37 Elite is a portable 37-key MIDI keyboard controller designed for music production and performance. It features velocity-sensitive keys, RGB backlit pads, rotary encoders, faders, and a built-in FM synthesizer. This manual provides detailed instructions for setting up, operating, and maintaining your SMK-37 Elite.

2. Product Overview

2.1 Back of Device

  1. Audio Output: 3.5mm audio output jack for connecting headphones or external speakers.
  2. MIDI Output: 3.5mm standard MIDI adapter port for connecting to external MIDI devices.
  3. Power: Switch to turn the MIDI keyboard on or off.
  4. USB: USB-C connection port for power and MIDI data transfer.
  5. Sustain: 1/4 inch jack for connecting a sustain pedal.

2.2 Front Panel Controls

  1. Pitch Wheel and Modulation Wheel:
    • Pitch Wheel: Scroll the pitch stripe up and down to control pitch bend. The center position represents the original pitch. Releasing the stripe returns the sound to its original pitch.
    • Modulation Wheel: Scroll the modulation wheel to send continuous MIDI CC messages. This can often be assigned to various parameters in your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) using MIDI Learn.
  2. Display Area: A 1.54-inch color display provides visual feedback for various device settings and modes.
  3. Button Area:
    • Knob Bank: Press to switch control to knobs 9-16.
    • Fader Bank: Press to switch control to faders 5-8.
    • Pad Bank: Press both Knob Bank and Fader Bank buttons simultaneously to switch control to pads 9-16.
    • Left Button: Sends custom MIDI messages or accesses specific functions.
    • Right Button: Sends custom MIDI messages or accesses specific functions.
  4. Knobs: Eight assignable 360-degree rotary encoders. These can send Aftertouch, MIDI CC, or pitch information, configurable via the MIDI SUITE software.
  5. Pads: Sixteen RGB backlit pads with velocity-sensitive and aftertouch capabilities.
  6. Faders: Four assignable faders for controlling parameters like volume, pan, or MIDI CC values in your DAW or device software.
  7. Button Area 2 (Arp): Press the ARP button to enable the Arpeggiator. To adjust Arpeggiator parameters, press and hold the ARP button while rotating a knob or pressing specific keys.

3. Initial Setup

3.1 Unpacking and Powering On

  1. Carefully remove the SMK-37 Elite from its packaging.
  2. Locate the Power switch on the back of the device (refer to Figure 2.1, item 3).
  3. Switch the power to the 'ON' position. The device can be powered by its internal battery or via the USB-C port.

3.2 Connections

  • USB Connection: Connect the supplied USB-C cable from the SMK-37 Elite's USB port (Figure 2.1, item 4) to your computer or a USB power adapter. This provides power and enables MIDI communication with your computer.
  • MIDI Output: Use a 3.5mm standard MIDI adapter cable to connect the MIDI Output port (Figure 2.1, item 2) to the MIDI In port of an external MIDI device.
  • Audio Output: Connect headphones or speakers to the 3.5mm Audio Output jack (Figure 2.1, item 1) to monitor the built-in synthesizer sound.
  • Sustain Pedal: Connect a 1/4-inch sustain pedal to the Sustain port (Figure 2.1, item 5) for expressive control.

3.3 Wireless Bluetooth MIDI Connection

The SMK-37 Elite supports wireless Bluetooth MIDI connectivity with Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android devices.

  1. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your host device (computer, tablet, or smartphone).
  2. On your host device, search for available Bluetooth MIDI devices.
  3. Select 'SMK-37 Elite' from the list to pair.
  4. For Windows users, Bluetooth 5.0 is recommended, and an additional BLE MIDI Driver may be required.

4. Operation

4.1 Playing the Keys and Pads

  • Keys: The 37 velocity-sensitive keys respond to how hard you press them, allowing for dynamic musical expression.
  • Pads: The 16 RGB backlit pads are velocity-sensitive and support aftertouch. Use them for drumming, triggering samples, or playing chords.
  • Pad Bank: To access pads 9-16, press both the Knob Bank and Fader Bank buttons simultaneously.

4.2 Using Encoders and Faders

  • Rotary Encoders: The 8 endless rotary encoders can be assigned to control various parameters in your DAW or internal synthesizer. Use the Knob Bank button to switch between different sets of parameters (e.g., knobs 1-8 and 9-16).
  • Faders: The 4 assignable faders provide tactile control over parameters like volume, pan, or filter cutoff. Use the Fader Bank button to expand control to 8 faders.

4.3 Arpeggiator and Note Repeat

  • Arpeggiator: Press the ARP button to activate the arpeggiator. It will automatically play a sequence of notes based on the chord you hold. Adjust arpeggiator parameters by holding the ARP button and rotating an encoder or pressing specific keys.
  • Note Repeat: The Note Repeat function allows for rhythmic repetition of notes.

4.4 Built-in Sequencer

The SMK-37 Elite includes a built-in sequencer that supports saving up to 8 patterns. This allows you to create and play back note patterns step-by-step or in real-time. Note: When Arpeggiator and Note Repeat are enabled, the sequencer cannot be activated.

4.5 Internal Sound Source (FM Synthesizer)

The SMK-37 Elite features a built-in FM synthesizer. Connect headphones or speakers to the Audio Output jack to hear the internal sounds without needing an external computer or DAW.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the surface of the keyboard. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery Care: To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. If storing for an extended period, charge the battery to approximately 50% and recharge every few months.
  • Avoid Liquids: Keep the keyboard away from liquids to prevent damage to internal components.

6. Troubleshooting
