1. Introduction
The Orientek TFL-Q Visual Fault Locator (VFL) is a compact and efficient tool designed for fiber optic cable testing. It emits a visible red laser light (650nm) that helps locate breaks, bends, faulty connectors, or splices in fiber optic cables. Equipped with a universal 2.5mm connector, it is compatible with various fiber optic connector types including SC, ST, and FC. Its built-in LED light enhances usability in dark environments.
2. Safety Information
- Laser Radiation: This device emits visible laser radiation. Avoid direct eye exposure to the laser beam. Do not stare into the beam or view directly with optical instruments.
- Battery Safety: To avoid electrical shock, remove the battery compartment cover only when replacing batteries. Do not connect improperly. Do not charge or dispose of batteries in fire; batteries may explode or leak.
- Keep the device away from water and extreme temperatures.
- Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the device yourself. Refer to qualified personnel for service.
3. Product Overview
3.1 Components
- Laser Output Port: 2.5mm universal connector for fiber connection.
- LED Flashlight: Provides illumination in dark work areas.
- Power Button: Turns the device on/off.
- Mode Button: Switches between Continuous Wave (CW) and 2Hz pulsed laser modes.
- Battery Compartment: Holds 2x AAA 1.5V batteries.
- Dust Cap: Protects the laser output port when not in use.
- Key-chain Loop: For easy portability.
4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
- Slide or unclip the cover to open the compartment.
- Insert two (2) AAA 1.5V batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery compartment cover securely.
Note: Batteries are not included with the device.
4.2 Connecting to Fiber Optic Cable
- Remove the dust cap from the VFL's laser output port.
- Ensure the fiber optic connector is clean. Use a fiber optic cleaner if necessary.
- Gently insert the fiber optic cable's connector (SC, ST, or FC) into the VFL's 2.5mm universal adapter.
- Ensure a snug fit to prevent light loss and ensure accurate testing.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Powering On/Off
- Press the Power Button (usually yellow) to turn the device on.
- Press and hold the Power Button for a few seconds to turn the device off.
5.2 Using the Visual Fault Locator (VFL)
- Ensure the fiber optic cable is connected as described in Section 4.2.
- Turn on the device using the Power Button. The red laser will activate.
- Press the Mode Button (usually green) to cycle between Continuous Wave (CW) mode and 2Hz pulsed mode.
- CW Mode: Emits a steady red light, ideal for continuous fault tracing.
- 2Hz Pulsed Mode: Emits a blinking red light, which can make faults easier to spot, especially over longer distances or in bright environments.
- Observe the fiber optic cable for any visible red light leakage, which indicates a fault.
- After use, disconnect the fiber and replace the dust cap.
5.3 Using the LED Flashlight
- The LED flashlight can be activated independently or concurrently with the VFL function.
- Press the Mode Button (green) briefly to toggle the LED flashlight on or off.
- This feature is useful for illuminating dark work areas.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning the Connector: Regularly clean the 2.5mm universal connector with a lint-free wipe and fiber optic cleaning solution to ensure optimal performance and prevent contamination.
- Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the laser light appears dim or the device fails to power on. Always use fresh AAA 1.5V batteries.
- Storage: When not in use, always replace the rubber dustproof cover on the laser output port to protect it from dust and debris. Store the device in a cool, dry place.
- General Cleaning: Wipe the exterior of the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not power on. | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries. | Check battery polarity. Replace with new AAA 1.5V batteries. |
| Laser light is dim or intermittent. | Low battery power. Dirty fiber optic connector or VFL output port. | Replace batteries. Clean the fiber optic connector and VFL output port. |
| Cannot detect faults in fiber. | Fiber not properly connected. Fault beyond testing distance. Severe fiber damage. | Ensure secure connection. Verify the VFL model's testing distance (e.g., 30km for TFL-Q-30). Inspect fiber for severe damage. |
| LED flashlight not working. | Device off or LED function not activated. | Ensure device is on. Press the Mode Button to toggle the LED. |

9. User Tips
- For optimal battery life, always turn off the VFL when not in active use.
- When testing short fiber runs, the CW (Continuous Wave) mode is often sufficient. For longer runs or to make faint light leaks more noticeable, switch to the 2Hz pulsed mode.
- Always use a fiber inspection microscope to check the end-face of your fiber connectors before connecting them to the VFL to prevent damage to the VFL's output port and ensure accurate readings.
- Keep spare AAA batteries on hand, especially for extended field work, as working time varies significantly with laser power.
- The compact size and key-chain design make it easy to carry; consider attaching it to your tool bag for quick access.
