2. Safety Information

Please read and understand the following safety precautions before installing or operating your motherboard kit:

  • Always disconnect the power supply from the wall outlet before touching any internal components.
  • Wear an anti-static wrist strap or frequently touch a grounded metal object to discharge static electricity, which can damage electronic components.
  • Handle components by their edges, avoiding contact with pins or circuitry.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in your computer case to prevent overheating.
  • Do not force components into place. If a component does not fit easily, double-check its orientation and compatibility.

3. Setup and Installation

3.1 Motherboard Layout

Familiarize yourself with the motherboard layout and its various connectors before installation.

Detailed layout diagram of the X99S D4 PLUS motherboard
Figure 2: X99S D4 PLUS Motherboard Layout. Key components include DDR4 slots, M.2 NVMe, M.2 NGFF, LGA2011-3 socket, power connectors, SATA ports, PCI-E slots, USB headers, and other front panel connectors.

3.2 CPU Installation

Follow these steps carefully to install the Intel Xeon E5 2680 V4 CPU:

CPU Installation Steps for LGA 2011-3 socket
Figure 3: CPU Installation Steps.
  1. Step 1: Press the wire buckle on the CPU socket by hand and lift it up. Remember not to remove the black cover before installing the CPU.
  2. Step 2: The motherboard base has 3 bayonets (red circles in Figure 3). The CPU itself also has 3 bayonets. Align them one by one, and then gently place the CPU into the socket.
  3. Step 3: Lower the wire buckle that was lifted up. The black cover on the socket will pop up automatically. Remember not to remove the black cover before installing the CPU.

Precautions:

  • Do not open the CPU top cover.
  • Do not touch the CPU pins to contact the core.
  • Do not touch the motherboard interface pins.

3.3 CPU Cooler Installation

Install the provided CPU cooler onto the CPU. Ensure proper contact between the cooler's base and the CPU's integrated heat spreader (IHS). Apply thermal paste if not pre-applied. Secure the cooler according to its specific mounting mechanism.

3.4 RAM Installation

Insert the two 16GB DDR4 2400MHz ECC REG RAM modules into the designated DDR4 slots on the motherboard. Ensure the notches on the RAM modules align with the keys in the slots. Press down firmly on both ends until the retention clips snap into place.

3.5 M.2 NVMe SSD Installation

Install the 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD into the M.2 NVMe slot. Ensure the SSD is inserted correctly to prevent interface damage.

3.6 Power Supply Connection

Connect the 24-pin ATX power connector and the 8-pin AUX12V power connector from your power supply to the motherboard. A power supply of at least 500W is recommended for stable operation.

3.7 CR2032 Battery

The CR2032 3V battery for the motherboard's CMOS will be removed before shipping due to customs regulations. Please purchase a CR2032 3V battery locally and install it into the battery holder on the motherboard.

4. Operating Instructions

After assembling all components and connecting peripherals, you can power on your system. The motherboard will perform a Power-On Self-Test (POST). If all components are detected correctly, the system will proceed to boot from your installed operating system.

4.1 BIOS and Drivers

For optimal performance and compatibility, it is recommended to install the latest drivers for your motherboard components (chipset, audio, network, etc.) and update the BIOS if necessary. Please contact customer service to obtain the necessary BIOS files and drivers.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cooling System

The included CPU cooler is designed for efficient heat dissipation. Ensure that the cooler fans are free from dust and obstructions to maintain optimal airflow. Regularly clean the heatsink fins and fan blades using compressed air.

The copper tubes on the cooler may show signs of end sealing, which is a normal manufacturing process and not a defect.

5.2 General Cleaning

Periodically clean the interior of your computer case to prevent dust buildup on components, which can lead to overheating and reduced performance. Use compressed air to remove dust from fans, heatsinks, and other components.

6. Troubleshooting

  • System not powering on: Ensure all power cables (24-pin ATX, 8-pin AUX12V) are securely connected to the motherboard and the power supply is adequately rated (at least 500W). Check the front panel power switch connection.
  • No display: Verify that the graphics card (if dedicated) is properly seated in its PCI-E slot and connected to the power supply. Ensure the monitor cable is securely connected to the graphics card or integrated graphics port.
  • Memory errors: Reseat the DDR4 RAM modules. Ensure they are fully clicked into place.
  • M.2 SSD not detected: Confirm that the M.2 SSD is an NVMe type and not a SATA type, as the motherboard supports NVMe M.2. Ensure it is correctly seated in the M.2 slot.
  • CPU issues: If the CPU is used, minor physical scratches are normal and generally do not affect performance. Ensure the CPU is correctly installed in the LGA 2011-3 socket as per the installation steps.
  • BIOS/Driver issues: If experiencing instability or compatibility problems, ensure you have the latest BIOS and drivers. Contact customer service for assistance.
