Instruction Manual

1. Introduction

The GEPRC DarkStar22 CineWhoop FPV Drone is designed for high performance and portability, offering an exceptional flying experience for both indoor and outdoor environments. It is available in two main configurations: the WTFPV version and the O4 Pro version, with the latter featuring the D-J-I O4 Pro VTX system for ultra-low latency, HD stable long-range transmission.

This drone incorporates the TAKER F405 20A ELRS2.4 2-4S AIO flight controller with an integrated receiver, simplifying setup by eliminating the need for an additional external receiver and ensuring compatibility with mainstream ELRS protocol radios. Its innovative five-point floating damping system provides a stable platform for the O4 Pro gyro, resulting in smooth and stabilized video output. With a reserved GPS mount, pilots can enhance flight positioning and safety in outdoor settings. The SPEEDX2 1104 7500KV motors and newly designed high-efficiency 2219 propellers deliver a powerful yet balanced flight performance. The compact and reinforced design, including a thickened canopy and prop guards, makes it durable and suitable for beginners.

5.3. Receiver Binding (ELRS 2.4G)

The drone features an integrated ELRS 2.4G receiver. To bind it with your ELRS protocol radio, follow the standard ELRS binding procedure for your specific radio transmitter. Typically, this involves putting the receiver into binding mode (often by powering it on/off three times rapidly) and then initiating the binding process from your radio.

5.4. Betaflight Configuration (LED Strips)

The drone is equipped with COB LED strips powered by a mini controllable BEC. To utilize and control these LED strips, you will need to configure them within Betaflight. After flashing the firmware, enable the appropriate channel in the Modes tab. For initial setup, you may need to enter specific commands in the Betaflight CLI:

resource SERIAL_TX 5 none
resource PINIO C12
set pinio_config = 129,1,1,1
set pinio_box = 39,40,41,42
save

6. Operation

6.1. Pre-Flight Checklist

  • Ensure battery is fully charged and securely connected.
  • Check propellers for any damage or loose connections.
  • Verify radio transmitter is powered on and bound to the drone.
  • Perform a visual inspection of the drone for any loose parts or debris.
  • Choose a safe and open flying area, clear of people and obstacles.

6.2. Flight Controls

Familiarize yourself with your radio transmitter's controls. The DarkStar22 supports MODE1 and MODE2 controller modes. Practice basic maneuvers in a safe environment before attempting complex flights.

6.3. Indoor and Outdoor Use

The DarkStar22 is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. Its compact size and prop guards make it suitable for indoor environments, while its powerful motors and optional GPS support allow for free and safer outdoor flights.

7. Maintenance

  • Propeller Inspection: Regularly check propellers for cracks, bends, or chips. Replace them immediately if any damage is found to ensure safe and stable flight.
  • Cleaning: Keep the drone clean from dust, dirt, and debris. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the frame and components. Avoid using liquids directly on electronic parts.
  • Screw Tightness: Periodically check all screws, especially those holding the frame and motors, to ensure they are tight. Vibrations during flight can sometimes loosen them.
  • Battery Care: Store batteries in a cool, dry place. Do not overcharge or over-discharge LiHV batteries. Follow manufacturer guidelines for battery charging and storage.
  • Motor Inspection: Check motors for any signs of wear, such as unusual noise or resistance when spinning by hand. Ensure no debris is lodged in the motor bells.
  • Firmware Updates: Keep your flight controller firmware updated to the latest version to benefit from performance improvements and bug fixes.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Drone Not Powering On:
    • Check battery connection and ensure it is fully charged.
    • Inspect the XT30U-M power connector for damage.
  • No Connection to Radio Transmitter:
    • Ensure the radio is powered on and set to the correct model profile.
    • Re-attempt the binding procedure for the ELRS 2.4G receiver.
    • Verify the receiver is properly connected to the flight controller.
  • Unstable Flight / Drifting:
    • Calibrate the accelerometer and gyroscope in Betaflight.
    • Check for bent or damaged propellers and replace if necessary.
    • Ensure motors are spinning freely and are clean.
    • Verify PID settings in Betaflight are appropriate for your setup.
  • Video Feed Issues (O4 Pro version):
    • Check connections to the D-J-I O4 Air Unit Pro VTX and camera module.
    • Ensure the VTX antenna is securely attached and undamaged.
    • Verify your goggles/receiver are on the correct channel and frequency.
  • LED Strips Not Working:
    • Check wiring connections for the LED strips and mini BEC.
    • Review Betaflight CLI commands and Modes tab settings for LED control.

9. User Tips

  • Version Selection: Be mindful of the specific version you purchase (WTFPV or O4 Pro) as the WTFPV version does not include a VTX, camera, or antenna. Plan your setup accordingly.
  • Controller Compatibility: The O4 Pro PNP version is compatible with the DJI FPV RC3 controller, offering seamless integration for DJI users.
  • Battery Choice: While the recommended battery is GEPRC Storm LiHV 3S 720mAh, ensure any alternative batteries meet the voltage and discharge rate requirements for optimal performance and safety.
  • GPS for Outdoor Flying: For enhanced safety and flight positioning during outdoor flights, consider installing a compatible Mini GPS module in the reserved slot.
  • Betaflight Backup: Always back up your Betaflight configuration (CLI dump) after initial setup and before making significant changes. This allows for easy restoration if issues arise.
