5. Setup
5.1. Battery Installation
- Ensure the trimmer is switched off and the lock button is engaged.
- Align the battery pack with the battery port on the trimmer.
- Slide the battery pack into place until it clicks securely. To remove, press the release button on the battery pack and slide it out.
Note: This tool is sold without a battery. Use only genuine Makita 18V LXT batteries.

5.2. Collet and Bit Installation
- Ensure the trimmer is off and the battery is removed.
- Press and hold the shaft lock button (Figure 1) to prevent the shaft from rotating.
- Loosen the collet nut using the appropriate wrench.
- Insert the desired router bit into the collet. Ensure the shank of the bit is fully inserted into the collet.
- Tighten the collet nut firmly with the wrench while holding the shaft lock button. Do not overtighten.
5.3. Base and Depth Adjustment
- Loosen the base height adjustment screw (Figure 2) or locking lever (Figure 3).
- Adjust the base to the desired height for your trimming depth. Use the Depth Scale (Figure 3) for precise measurements.
- Tighten the adjustment screw or locking lever securely to fix the base position.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1. Powering On/Off
- To turn on the trimmer, press the Power Button (Figure 2). The LED job lights will illuminate.
- To turn off, press the Power Button again.
- For continuous operation, engage the Lock Button (Figure 2) after pressing the Power Button. Press the Power Button again to release the lock.
6.2. Speed Control
The DRT50 features a 5-level speed adjustable dial (Figure 2) and variable speed control (Figure 1). Rotate the dial to select the appropriate speed for your material and bit type. Start with a lower speed and gradually increase as needed.
6.3. Using the LED Job Lights
The dual LED job lights (Figure 1) automatically illuminate when the trimmer is powered on, providing increased visibility of the cutting edge.
6.4. Trimming and Routing Operations
- Ensure the workpiece is securely clamped.
- Hold the trimmer firmly with both hands using the non-slip PVC handle.
- Start the trimmer and allow it to reach full speed before contacting the workpiece.
- Guide the trimmer smoothly along the desired path. Maintain a consistent feed rate.
- Utilize the dust collecting feature by connecting a compatible dust extraction system to the Milling Cutter Installation Port (Figure 2) for a cleaner work environment.
