The LEXXSON CarPlay AI Box is a versatile device designed to upgrade your OEM car monitor by adding an open Android 13 operating system via the USB port. This device supports wired or wireless Apple CarPlay functionality, allowing for the installation of various applications, enhanced audio and video entertainment, and advanced navigation features. It also supports 4G (5G on special models), GPS, Bluetooth, phone connectivity, and hot-spot tethering, enabling both wireless CarPlay and wireless Android Auto.

3. Setup Guide

3.1 Package Contents

3.2 Connecting the Device (Plug and Play)

  1. Ensure your car's OEM monitor supports wired or wireless Apple CarPlay.
  2. Connect the CarPlay AI Box to your car's USB port using the provided USB or Type-C cable.
  3. The device will automatically boot up and display the Android system on your car's screen.

3.3 SIM/Micro SD Card Installation

The device supports external storage and network connectivity via SIM and Micro SD cards.

  • SIM Card Slot: For models APM1788 and APM1888, insert a 4G/5G SIM card for real-time internet access. Ensure the metal face is up and the notch corner is outwards.
  • Micro SD Card Slot: Insert a Micro SD card (up to 128GB) for additional storage.

Important: Do not insert or remove the SIM card or Micro SD card when the product is turned on. Always power off the device before inserting or removing cards.

3.4 HDMI Output (for specific models)

Only models "APM1288S", "APM1288BM", and "APM1288TOUCH" support HDMI video and audio output. You can connect a headrest monitor via the mini HDMI port for extended display.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Wireless CarPlay Connection

  1. After connecting the AI Box, click the "CarPlay" icon on your car's screen to enter the connection interface.
  2. On your iPhone (iPhone 6 or above, iOS 10 or above), turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
  3. Search for the Bluetooth name displayed on the car screen (e.g., "AIBox") in your iPhone's Bluetooth settings and initiate pairing.
  4. Confirm the pairing request on both devices. Allow contacts and favorites sync if prompted.

4.2 Wireless Android Auto Connection

  1. After connecting the AI Box, click the "Android Auto" icon on your car's screen to enter the connection interface.

The device provides a full Android system with access to the Google Play Store, allowing you to download and install various applications.

4.4 Media Playback from TF Card

Insert a TF card into the designated slot to play local audio and video files. Navigate to the 'Files' app on the device to access your media.

4.5 Phone Calls & Music Playback

With Dual Bluetooth 5.1BLE + 5.0BLE, the device allows for seamless phone calls and music playback. Bluetooth 5.0 is used for connecting to your phone for calls and music, while Master Blue 4.2 supports external Bluetooth devices like keyboards, mice, or OBD devices.

5. Firmware Update

5.1 Online Firmware Update (FOTA)

  1. On the main screen, locate and open the "Updater" application.
  2. Click "Check for Update" on the pop-up OTA screen. The device will detect and download any available differential upgrade packages from the firmware server.
  3. It is recommended to perform updates over a Wi-Fi network to avoid excessive data charges.
  4. Ensure the device battery is above 30% and not charging during the update process. Do not remove the battery or perform any other operations during the update to prevent boot errors.

5.2 Micro SD Card Upgrade

  1. Download the appropriate firmware file (e.g., "APM1888.zip", "APM1788.zip", etc., corresponding to your device model) and copy it directly to an empty Micro SD card. Do not decompress the file.
  2. Insert the Micro SD card into the device's slot.
  3. Power on the unit. The device will automatically begin the upgrade process.
  4. The update and reboot process typically takes 7-10 minutes. After completion, remove the Micro SD card.

6. Reset to Factory Settings

If you need to reset the AI Box to its factory settings:

  1. Navigate to the "Settings" menu on the device.
  2. Go to "System" and then "Reset options".
  3. Carefully review the reset options. Double-confirm the three reset options to avoid unintended data loss on your device.

7. Compatible Cars and Mobile Phones

7.1 Car Compatibility

The device is compatible with approximately 98% of cars that come with factory-installed wired CarPlay. It is essential that your car's OEM monitor supports wired or wireless Apple CarPlay functionality. Please note that BMW vehicles are generally not supported.

8. Troubleshooting (FAQ)

Q: What should I do if the SIM card is not recognized when inserted?

A:

  1. Confirm that the SIM card is inserted correctly: metal side up, notch corner outwards.
  2. Ensure the product is turned off before inserting or removing the SIM card. Do not hot-swap the SIM card.

Q: The Netflix display needs to be updated.

A: If a Netflix update prompt appears, click the "Cancel" button. Do not update or delete the preloaded software on the product.

Q: The SIM card is recognized, but the internet connection does not work.

A:

  1. Manually adjust the APN settings: Go to Settings > Network and Internet > APN.
  2. Insert the SIM card into an Android phone to check its APN information parameters. Then, in the product's Settings > Network and Internet > APN, add the APN parameters according to those from your mobile phone.
