2. Setup
Before operating the FOXWELL ST101 PRO, ensure all components are present and the device is properly prepared.
Initial Preparation:
- Add Test Oil: Inject 10ml-20ml of test oil (baby oil is recommended) into the smoke leak detector using the provided funnel. Do not overfill; ensure the liquid level is below the 'MAX' line to prevent oil spraying. A 20ml fill allows for approximately 10 minutes of continuous use.
- Connect Air Supply: This device does NOT have a built-in air pump. An external air compressor or air pump is required. Connect your external air pump to the 'Smoke Vent' port on the device.
- Mount the Device: Use the provided hook to hang the main unit securely under the vehicle's hood or in a stable position.

3. Operating Instructions
Follow these steps to perform a leak detection test using the FOXWELL ST101 PRO.
General Leak Detection Procedure:
- Prepare the Vehicle: Ensure the vehicle's engine is off and cool. Identify the pipeline system you intend to test for leaks.
- Access the Pipeline: Open or disconnect the necessary pipes to allow connection of the leak detector.
- Connect the Smoke Hose: Install the appropriate airbag adapter into the sealed pipe and connect the device's smoke conduit to it.
- Power On: Connect the power cords to a DC 12V battery. The red clamp connects to the positive (+) terminal, and the black clamp connects to the negative (-) terminal.
- Start Smoke Generation: Press the 'Start' button on the main unit. The device will begin producing smoke.
- Introduce Smoke: Lead the smoke into the service port or pipeline system.
- Locate Leaks: Observe the pipeline for escaping smoke, which indicates a leak point. For a sealed system, smoke should fill the pipe within approximately 1 minute. Leaks should become visible within 3 minutes.
- Stop Smoke Generation: Once the leak is identified or testing is complete, press the 'Stop' button.
- Disconnect: Disconnect the smoke hose, power cords, and remove any adapters.
EVAP and EGR System Testing:
For EVAP systems (American cars after 1996, European cars after 2000), locate the EVAP service port (often with a green cover). Use special tools to remove the valve core, install the EVAP service port test adapter, and connect the smoke tube.
For EGR valves or carbon canisters, disconnect the quick connector, select the appropriate test connector and tee connector from the kit, connect them in series, and attach the bypass test pipe to the smoke cone of the smoke tube.

4. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your FOXWELL ST101 PRO.
- Clean After Use: After each use, ensure any residual test oil is drained and the smoke tube is clear. Wipe down the main unit and accessories with a clean, dry cloth.
- Store Properly: Store the device and its accessories in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Check Connections: Regularly inspect power cords, smoke tubes, and adapters for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Replace damaged parts immediately.
- Oil Level Monitoring: Always ensure the test oil level is within the recommended range (below MAX) before operation to prevent malfunction or oil spraying.
5. Troubleshooting
This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your smoke leak detector.
Common Symptoms and Solutions:
- No Smoke Output:
- Check if the device is properly connected to a 12V DC power source.
- Ensure there is sufficient test oil in the reservoir.
- Verify that the external air pump is connected and functioning.
- Confirm the 'Start' button has been pressed.
- Oil Spraying from Smoke Outlet:
- The test oil reservoir might be overfilled. Reduce the oil level to below the 'MAX' indicator.
- Device Shuts Off Unexpectedly:
- The device may have activated its overheat protection. Allow it to cool down for at least 10 minutes before resuming operation.
- Check for proper ventilation around the unit.
- Difficulty Locating Leaks:
- Ensure the system being tested is properly sealed before introducing smoke.
- Increase the smoke output if necessary (if adjustable).
- Check for very small leaks that might require more time to become visible.
Engine Fault Codes Related to Leaks:
If your vehicle displays OBD trouble codes such as P0443-0457 or P0465-0469, these often indicate issues with the EVAP system, which can be diagnosed using this smoke leak detector.
