2.3 Adjusting the Braking System

The PR 100 II PRO features a MAGFORCE magnetic braking system with up to 21 levels of adjustment, a mechanical brake, and a star drag. These adjustments allow you to fine-tune your casting distance and control, as well as the drag pressure on a fish.

  • Magnetic Brake (Micro-adjustment knob): This system uses centrifugal force from the spool's rotation to activate an inductor rotor, providing smooth braking. It activates during the initial phase of the cast to prevent backlash and extends the braking effect for longer casts. Adjust this knob to control the magnetic force; higher settings provide more braking, reducing backlash, while lower settings allow for longer casts.
  • Mechanical Brake: This knob controls the spool tension. Adjust it so that your lure falls slowly when the freespool button is pressed, without the spool continuing to spin excessively after the lure hits the ground.
  • Star Drag: The star-shaped knob adjusts the drag pressure applied to the line when a fish pulls. Turn clockwise to increase drag, counter-clockwise to decrease. Set the drag before fishing to approximately 25-30% of your line's breaking strength.

The magnetic brake side cover features a one-touch fixing mechanism for easy access and adjustment.

2.4 Handle Orientation

The DAIWA PR 100 II PRO is available in both Left Hand and Right Hand retrieve models. Ensure you have selected the model that matches your preferred retrieve style.

3. Operating the Reel

3.1 Casting

  1. Press the freespool button to disengage the spool.
  2. Hold the lure at the desired distance from the rod tip.
  3. Perform a smooth casting motion. As the lure flies, the MAGFORCE system will automatically manage spool rotation to prevent backlash.
  4. Use your thumb to feather the spool as the lure approaches the target to prevent overruns and ensure a soft landing.

3.2 Retrieving

Turn the handle to retrieve your line. The reel's gear ratio (6.4:1 or 7.3:1) determines the speed of line retrieval. The reinforced brass gear set ensures smooth and powerful retrieval.

3.3 Drag System Usage

When a fish bites, the drag system allows line to be pulled off the spool under tension, preventing line breakage. Adjust the star drag as needed during the fight to maintain control over the fish. The reel is equipped with a drag clicker sound for auditory feedback during drag engagement.

4. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life and performance of your DAIWA PR 100 II PRO reel.

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in saltwater or poor water quality environments, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Allow it to air dry completely in a cool, ventilated place before storage. Long-term adhesion of salt, alkali, and foreign matter to metal parts can significantly reduce the reel's lifespan.
  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of high-quality reel oil to moving parts and grease to gears as recommended by DAIWA. Avoid over-lubrication.
  • Storage: Store your reel in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Disassembly: DAIWA strongly advises against users disassembling any fishing reel, including the side cover of baitcasting reels. Improper assembly can lead to malfunctions and may void your warranty.

5. Troubleshooting

Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:

  • Backlash/Bird's Nest: This usually occurs due to improper magnetic brake or mechanical brake settings, or an incorrect casting technique. Adjust your magnetic brake to a higher setting and ensure your mechanical brake is set correctly. Practice smooth casting motions.
  • Stiff Handle/Rough Retrieval: This could indicate a need for cleaning and lubrication. Follow the maintenance guidelines. If the issue persists, professional service may be required.
  • Drag Slipping or Not Holding: Check if the star drag is tightened sufficiently. Ensure there is no debris or corrosion affecting the drag washers. If the problem continues, the drag washers may need inspection or replacement by a professional.
  • Spool Not Engaging/Disengaging: Check for any obstructions around the freespool button or spool. If the mechanism feels jammed, do not force it.

For complex issues, it is recommended to contact DAIWA customer support or an authorized service center.

7. User Tips

  • Practice Makes Perfect: Spend time practicing your casting technique in an open area to get accustomed to the reel's feel and the magnetic brake settings before heading out to fish.
  • Start with Higher Brake Settings: If you are new to baitcasting reels, start with a higher magnetic brake setting to minimize backlash. Gradually reduce the setting as your casting skill improves for longer distances.
  • Thumb Control is Key: Always keep your thumb lightly on the spool during the cast and retrieve to prevent overruns and manage line flow.
  • Match Lure Weight: Ensure your lure weight is appropriate for your rod and reel setup. Using lures that are too light or too heavy can negatively impact casting performance and increase the risk of backlash.

8. Warranty and Support

For warranty information, service, or technical support, please refer to the documentation provided with your purchase or contact your authorized DAIWA dealer or the manufacturer directly. Please note that all fishing reel repairs and maintenance services will be charged according to company regulations.
