6. Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to properly set up your external canister filter:
- Prepare Filter Media: Open the filter head by unbuckling the side clips (22). Remove the media trays (8) and rinse any new filter media (sponges, ceramic rings, carbon, etc.) thoroughly under tap water to remove dust. Arrange the media in the trays according to your desired filtration stages (mechanical, biological, chemical).
- Assemble Pump: The water pump (12) is designed for internal placement within the filter body. Ensure it is securely fitted into its designated slot.
- Connect Hoses: Attach the inlet and outlet hoses to the respective inlet (5) and outlet (6) adjusters on the filter head. Secure them with clamps (19).
- Assemble Inlet/Outlet Pipework: Connect the various pipe sections (9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 21) using the right-angle connectors (16) and connection tubes (11, 13) to form the inlet and outlet pipe assemblies. The inlet pipe (14) typically includes a strainer, and the outlet pipe (21) can be a spray bar (17) or a single outlet nozzle.
- Install in Aquarium: Place the assembled inlet and outlet pipework inside your aquarium. Use the suction cups (20) and clamps (10, 19) to secure them firmly to the aquarium glass. Ensure the inlet strainer is positioned to draw water from the lower part of the tank, and the outlet provides good water circulation.
- Position Filter: Place the filter body on a stable, level surface below the aquarium. The filter operates by gravity feed, so it must be lower than the water level in the tank.
- Connect Hoses to Aquarium Pipework: Connect the free ends of the hoses from the filter head to the corresponding inlet and outlet pipework in the aquarium. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.
- Prime the Filter: The filter is designed to be filled with water before starting. Open the inlet and outlet adjusters (5, 6) fully. You may need to manually fill the filter canister with water or use a priming button/lever if available (refer to specific model features). Once water starts flowing from the aquarium into the filter, close the filter head securely.
- Power On: Once the filter is primed and all connections are secure, plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet. The filter should start operating, and water should begin flowing through the system. Check for any leaks immediately.
7. Operating Instructions
- Starting the Filter: After successful installation and priming, plug in the filter. The pump will start circulating water.
- Adjusting Flow: The inlet and outlet adjusters (5, 6) allow you to control the water flow rate. Adjust them as needed for your aquarium's requirements.
- UV Lamp Operation (HW-505B only): The HW-505B model features an integrated UV germicidal lamp. This lamp operates automatically when the filter is powered on. The indicator light (4) on the filter head will illuminate when the UV lamp is active.
- Monitoring: Regularly check the filter for proper operation, ensuring consistent water flow and no unusual noises or leaks.
8. Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficiency of your filter and the health of your aquarium.
Cleaning Frequency:
- Mechanical Media (Sponges/Pads): Rinse weekly or bi-weekly, depending on bio-load.
- Chemical Media (Carbon/Resins): Replace every 2-4 weeks as per manufacturer's recommendations.
- Biological Media (Ceramic Rings/Bio-balls): Rinse gently in old aquarium water every 1-3 months to preserve beneficial bacteria. Never rinse with tap water.
- Impeller: Inspect and clean the pump impeller (12) every 1-3 months to prevent blockages and maintain flow.
- UV Lamp (HW-505B only): Replace the UV bulb (2) every 6-12 months, as its effectiveness diminishes even if it appears to be working. Clean the quartz sleeve (2) during media cleaning.
Cleaning Procedure:
- Unplug the filter from the power outlet.
- Close the inlet and outlet adjusters (5, 6) to prevent water from flowing out of the aquarium.
- Disconnect the hoses from the filter head.
- Carry the filter unit to a sink or bucket.
- Unbuckle the side clips (22) and remove the filter head (23).
- Carefully remove the media trays (8) and clean/replace media as described above.
- Remove and clean the pump impeller (12) and its housing.
- For HW-505B, carefully remove and clean the quartz tube (2) and replace the UV lamp if necessary.
- Reassemble the filter, ensuring all O-rings are properly seated and lubricated (if needed) and clips are securely fastened.
- Reconnect hoses, prime the filter, and plug it back in.
9. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Reduced Water Flow | Clogged filter media, dirty impeller, kinked hoses, air in filter. | Clean/replace media, clean impeller, check hoses for kinks, re-prime filter to remove air. |
| Filter Not Starting | No power, pump not primed, impeller jammed. | Check power connection, ensure filter is primed, clean impeller. |
| Excessive Noise | Air trapped in filter, dirty/damaged impeller, filter not level. | Re-prime filter, clean/inspect impeller, ensure filter is on a level surface. |
| Water Leaking | Loose connections, damaged O-rings, improper assembly. | Check all hose connections, inspect and replace O-rings if damaged, reassemble carefully. |
| UV Lamp Not Lighting (HW-505B) | UV bulb burnt out, power issue, faulty indicator light. | Replace UV bulb, check power connection, contact support if indicator light is faulty. |
10. User Tips
- Ensure all connections are tight to prevent leaks, especially after maintenance.
- Regularly check and clean filter media to maintain optimal water flow and filtration efficiency.
- For models with UV lamps, remember to replace the UV bulb periodically (every 6-12 months) as its effectiveness diminishes over time, even if it still glows.
- Consider using a thin layer of filter floss as the top mechanical media for easy replacement and improved water clarity.
