6. Setup and Installation

6.1 Prerequisites

A ZigBee gateway (hub) is required for the sensor to function and connect to your smart home network. Please ensure you have a compatible ZigBee gateway purchased separately.

ZigBee Gateway Requirement Diagram
The sensor requires a ZigBee gateway to connect to your home network and app.

6.2 Battery Installation

  1. Open the battery compartment cover on the sensor.
  2. Insert the provided CR123A battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.
Ultra-Long Battery Life with CR123A
The sensor is powered by a CR123A battery, offering up to 2 years of life.

6.3 Pairing with ZigBee Gateway

  1. Ensure your ZigBee gateway is powered on and connected to your home Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open the Tuya Smart Life or MOES app on your smartphone.
  3. Navigate to the gateway interface and select "Add sub-device" or similar option.
  4. Follow the app's instructions to put the gateway into pairing mode.
  5. On the sensor, press and hold the reset button (usually a small pinhole button) for 5-10 seconds until the indicator light flashes, indicating it's in pairing mode.
  6. Once the sensor is discovered by the gateway, confirm the pairing in the app.
  7. Rename the sensor for easy identification (e.g., "Kitchen Leak Sensor", "Outdoor Rain Sensor").

6.4 Placement and Installation

The sensor offers two installation methods:

  • Stable Placement: Simply place the sensor on a flat surface where water detection is needed.
  • Wall Mounting: Use the provided adhesive sticker to mount the sensor on a vertical surface. Ensure the detection electrodes are positioned to come into contact with water.

Consider placing the sensor in areas prone to water leaks or rain:

  • Under sinks, near water heaters, washing machines, or dishwashers.
  • In bathrooms, near toilets or bathtubs.
  • Near windows or doors that might be left open during rain.
  • Around fish tanks or indoor plant areas.
  • Outdoors, in areas where rain detection is desired (e.g., near smart window systems).
Two Installation Methods for the Sensor
The sensor can be placed stably or mounted to a wall using adhesive.
IPX4 Water Resistant Performance
The IPX4 rating ensures the sensor's water-resistant performance in rainy or humid conditions.

7. Operation

7.1 Water/Rain Detection

When water comes into contact with the sensor's electrodes, it will trigger a detection event. The sensor will send an alert to your ZigBee gateway, which then forwards a push notification to your smartphone via the app.

Push Notification for Instant Alarm
Receive instant push notifications on your phone when water is detected.
Scenarios for Water Leakage Detection
The sensor helps detect water leakage in various scenarios like forgotten windows, pipe leaks, bathroom overflows, and fish tank leaks.

7.2 Adjusting Sensitivity

The detection sensitivity can be adjusted through the Tuya Smart Life or MOES app. This allows you to fine-tune the sensor to your environment, preventing false alarms while ensuring reliable detection.

Ultra-Sensitive Detection with Adjustable Sensitivity
Adjust the sensor's sensitivity via the app to detect even the tiniest water droplets.

7.3 Ambient Light Detection

The sensor also includes an ambient light detection feature. It reports the surrounding light levels (0-4000 Lux) to the app, which can be used to trigger smart automations.

Ambient Light Detection
The sensor detects ambient light levels, shown here at 750 Lux.

7.4 Smart Automations

Leverage the smart home platform to create automation rules based on sensor triggers:

  • Rain Detection & Window Closing: If rain is detected, automatically close smart windows (requires ZigBee Window Pusher and Gateway).
Automatic Window Closing on Rainy Days Automation
Automate window closing when rain is detected by linking the sensor with a ZigBee Window Pusher and Gateway.
  • Water Leak & Alarm Trigger: If a water leak is detected, trigger a ZigBee siren alarm (requires ZigBee Siren Alarm and Gateway).
Water Leak Detected, Alarm Triggered Instantly Automation
Detect water leaks and instantly trigger a ZigBee Siren Alarm through the ZigBee Gateway.
  • Darkness & Light Activation: If ambient light falls below a certain threshold, automatically turn on ZigBee lights (requires ZigBee Light and Gateway).
Light on When It Gets Dark Automation
The sensor can trigger a ZigBee light to turn on automatically when it detects darkness.

7.5 History Records

Access the app to view a detailed history of all detection events, including timestamps and event types (e.g., "Raining", "None").

Check History Records in App
Review a complete history of detection events within the app.

8. Maintenance

  • Battery Replacement: The sensor's battery life is approximately 2 years. When the battery level is low, you will receive a notification in the app. Replace the CR123A battery as described in Section 6.2.
  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the sensor's surface and electrodes with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or debris. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Firmware Updates: Check the Tuya Smart Life or MOES app regularly for any available firmware updates for your sensor and gateway to ensure optimal performance and security.

9. Troubleshooting

9.1 Sensor Not Detecting Water/Rain

  • Check Battery: Ensure the CR123A battery is correctly installed and not depleted. Replace if necessary.
  • ZigBee Connection: Verify that the sensor is within range of your ZigBee gateway and that the gateway is online.
  • App Settings: Check the sensor's settings in the app, particularly the sensitivity level. Increase sensitivity if needed.
  • Physical Obstruction: Ensure the detection electrodes are clean and free from any debris or blockages that might prevent water contact.

9.2 No Notifications Received

  • App Notifications: Confirm that push notifications are enabled for the Tuya Smart Life or MOES app in your phone's settings.
  • Internet Connectivity: Ensure your smartphone has an active internet connection.
  • Gateway Status: Verify that your ZigBee gateway is online and connected to the internet.
  • Automation Rules: If using automation, check that the rules are correctly configured in the app.

9.3 Sensor Appears Offline

  • Battery Level: A depleted battery is a common cause. Replace the CR123A battery.
  • Gateway Connection: Check the status of your ZigBee gateway. If it's offline, troubleshoot the gateway's connection.
  • Distance: The sensor might be too far from the gateway. Try moving it closer or adding a ZigBee repeater.
  • Re-pairing: If all else fails, try removing the device from the app and re-pairing it with the gateway.

9.4 False Alarms

  • Adjust Sensitivity: Lower the detection sensitivity in the app.
  • Placement: Ensure the sensor is not placed in an area where condensation, splashes, or minor dampness might trigger it unintentionally.

10. User Tips

  • Regular Battery Checks: Make it a habit to check the battery status of your sensor in the app periodically, even with its long battery life.
  • Test Periodically: Perform a manual test of the sensor every few months by applying a small amount of water to the electrodes to ensure it's functioning correctly and sending notifications.
  • Strategic Placement: Think carefully about the most critical areas for water detection in your home or outdoor space to maximize the sensor's effectiveness.
  • Leverage Automations: Explore the full potential of smart automations within the Tuya Smart Life or MOES app to create a truly responsive and protective smart home environment.
