Safety Warnings
DANGER: Electric Shock
Avoid contact with electric wires, high-voltage lines, iron bridges, or any conductive materials while fishing. Fishing rods are conductive, and contact can cause electric shock, leading to serious injury or death. Always fold the fishing rod away when changing fishing locations and never use it near power lines.
DANGER: Electric Shock Caused by Thunder
If thunder occurs during use, immediately move away from fishing rods and seek a safe place.
WARNING: When Throwing
When casting, ensure no other people are nearby to prevent injury from hooks, lures, or plumb bobs.
WARNING: Hanging Bottom Solution
If your line gets snagged (lures entangled in water or land obstacles), do not forcefully swing the rod. This can break the rod and cause injury. If possible, pull the line by hand and cut it. Wear gloves or use hand protection to avoid cuts from the fishing line.
WARNING: Damaged Rod
Be careful when handling a damaged fishing rod (broken, missing pieces, peeled). The damaged area can cause hand injury.
General Safety Tips
- Never fish alone. Always fish with a group of at least three people and stay within sight of each other.
- Wear a life vest or buoyancy aid. Wear light clothing in layers. Bulky sweaters and jackets become extremely heavy and difficult to remove if you fall into the water.
- Wear non-slip shoes and be careful not to slip or cut yourself on sharp, rocky edges.
- Look for secure footing and stay away from crumbling, slippery edges.
- Follow all warning signs.
- Do not use rods or poles within 30 meters of overhead power lines.
- Do not stand too close to other people when fishing.
- This product is not a toy and should not be used by children under 5 years old. Use only under adult supervision.
- Do not insert anything other than the recommended bobber into the product. This can cause serious injury.

How to Spool a Baitcaster
Follow these steps to properly spool your baitcasting reel:
- Begin by threading the line through the line guides of the rod and the line guide of the reel itself. Be careful not to miss any line guides as this can put added stress on the fishing line.
- Attach the line to the fishing reel with an arbor knot.
- To do the next part, you'll need an extra hand. Put a pencil or screwdriver through the eye of the fishing line spool and have your friend hold both sides. Note: It is important when spooling a baitcasting reel that the line comes off the spool in the same direction that it goes on the reel. If you don't have a friend who can give you an extra hand you can always use a Reel Spooling Station.
- Next, begin to reel in the line. As you begin to retrieve, use your opposite index finger and thumb to put some tension on the line. This will help the line to go on straight and tight.
- Fill the spool until it is 1/8 inch from the top of the spool. Tie on your favorite fishing lure and start fishing!

How to Switch the Handle (Right- or Left-Hand Retrieve)
The handle of your Sougayilang spinning reel can be switched for right- or left-hand retrieve:
- Remove the dust cap and keep it handy. Hold the reel firmly in the palm of your hand. Do not let the spool spin.
- Hold the handle near the base of the reel and quickly snap the handle backward (toward the rear of the reel). Note: Not all models have left-hand thread. If your handle does not loosen, turn the opposite way.
- Unscrew the handle until it comes off. Place the dust cap over the opening. Screw the handle into the other side of the reel.

How to Cast a Baitcaster
Proper casting technique is essential for effective fishing. Follow these steps:
- Reel in the line: Reel the line in until your bait or lure is 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 centimeters) from the rod tip. If you have a sinker or bobber attached to the line, it should be 6 to 12 inches from the rod tip instead.
- Hold the reel properly: Grip the rod behind the reel with your thumb resting over the reel spool. Baitcasting rods are designed the same as spin casting rods, and as with spin casting rods, most fishermen cast with the same hand they retrieve with, so if you prefer to hold the rod behind the reel when you retrieve, you'll need to switch hands when you cast.
- Turn the rod: Turn the rod so the reel handles point up. As with spin casting gear, this lets you use your wrist when you cast. If you cast with your opposite hand, the handles should point down.
- Press the reel spool release button: Baitcasting reels made since the 1970s have a mechanism to disengage the reel spool from the handles so they don't turn during the cast, allowing for longer casts. Most models today feature a release bar behind the spool that you press with your thumb when you rest it on the reel spool.
- Bend your casting arm: You need to bend your casting arm at the elbow so that the crook of your arm begins to approach a right angle. As you do, raise your rod until its tip goes slightly past vertical. This will give you the correct positioning to send the line out.
- Sweep the rod forward: Sweep the rod forward until it reaches eye level. This is about 30 degrees above horizontal, or the "10 o'clock" position. As you do so, lift your thumb off the reel spool enough so that the weight of your bait or lure pulls line off the spool as it is propelled toward the target.
- Stop the bait: Press down on the reel spool with your thumb to stop the bait when it reaches the target.

Maintenance
How to Clean a Baitcaster
Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and performance of your baitcasting reel. Always work on a clean, uncluttered surface.
Things You'll Need:
- Screwdriver
- Clean, lint-free cloth
- Soapy water
- Fresh water
- Toothbrush
- Towel for drying
- Reel oil
- Reel grease
- Check for oiling: To determine if your baitcaster needs to be oiled, flick your finger on the reel to check how freely it spins. If it turns slower than normal with a single flick, it needs oil.
- Clean exterior: Clean your baitcaster thoroughly before oiling. Wash the exterior with a clean cloth and soapy water, using a toothbrush to remove any particles of dirt or debris. Rinse with fresh water and dry thoroughly.
- Remove spool: Unscrew the retainer cap on your reel and take the spool out.
- Clean spool shaft: Clean the spool shaft with a toothbrush to remove any debris, old oil, or other lubricants.
- Lubricate: Apply reel grease to the shaft sparingly. Add a drop of gear oil to each bearing every 6 months or as needed. Replace the retainer cap. Lightly coat the exterior of your baitcaster with oil to prevent corrosion.

Post-Fishing Care (Saltwater)
- After using in saltwater, remove residual salt and dry thoroughly before storage.
- Always remove the reel from the rod before storage.
- Rinse the reel gently with fresh water using a showerhead or low-pressure hose to wash away salt and dirt.
- Avoid heated water as it can wash away grease. Do not immerse the reel in water or use high-pressure washing.
- Dry in a shaded area, avoiding direct sunlight, after thoroughly draining all water.
Troubleshooting
- Line Backlash / Bird's Nest: If you experience a "bird's nest" (spool continuing to turn after bait hits water), it's often due to not applying your thumb to the spool soon enough. Straighten out the tangled line before retrieving.
- Line Slippage (Braided Line): If using braided fishing line, it is best practice to use a monofilament line backing or wrap one layer of electrical tape around the spool to prevent slippage.
- Line Twist/Looseness: To ensure your fishing line is going on correctly, periodically stop retrieving and check your line. If you see line twist, or if the line seems loose or wants to come off the spool, stop and fix the problem immediately.
- Reel Not Spinning Freely: If the reel turns slower than normal with a single flick, it likely needs oil. Refer to the maintenance section for lubrication instructions.

User Tips
- Braided Line Backing: When using braided fishing line, it's recommended to use a monofilament line backing or wrap one layer of electrical tape around the spool to prevent line slippage.
- Improved Casting Control: For better control during casting, try resting your thumb at a slight angle on the spool instead of pressing the very flat of it on the line. This can enhance control over the line's stream.
- Lubrication Caution: When lubricating your reel, remember that less is often more. If you are unsure about the amount, apply only a small quantity. You can always add more later. Excessive lubricant can decrease performance and potentially damage the reel.
- Preventing Backlashes: Always maintain tension on the line when reeling in new line to prevent backlashes.
