Refractometer Structure and Optical Principles
  • **Prism:** The main optical component where the sample is placed.
  • **Daylight Plate (Cover Plate):** Protects the prism and spreads the sample evenly.
  • **Adjusting Screw (Calibration Screw):** Used for calibration to ensure accuracy.
  • **Tube:** The main body of the refractometer.
  • **Diopter Adjustment Knob (Eyepiece):** Used to focus the scale for clear viewing.
  • **Rubber Grip:** Provides a secure and comfortable hold.

Setup and Calibration

Before first use and periodically thereafter, calibrate the refractometer to ensure accurate readings.

  1. **Preparation:** Open the daylight plate. Carefully clean the detection prism and the underside of the daylight plate with a soft, damp cloth.
  2. **Apply Distilled Water:** Place 2-3 drops of distilled water onto the main prism. Close the daylight plate gently so the water spreads across the entire surface of the prism without air bubbles or dry spots.
  3. **Temperature Adjustment:** Allow the distilled water sample to temperature adjust on the prism for approximately 30 seconds. This ensures the sample reaches the ambient temperature of the refractometer.
  4. **View and Adjust:** Hold the refractometer with the daylight plate pointed towards a light source. Look into the eyepiece. You will see a circular field with a graduated scale. If the scale is unclear, rotate the diopter adjustment knob (eyepiece) to focus until the graduations are sharp.
  5. **Calibrate to Zero:** The field of view should show an upper blue portion and a lower white portion. Turn the calibration screw until the boundary line between the blue and white fields meets exactly on the "0" mark of the scale. This completes the calibration process.

Note on Temperature Compensation (ATC): If your instrument is equipped with Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC), ensure the ambient room temperature is approximately 20°C (68°F) when calibrating. When working temperature of the room or environment (not the sample) changes by more than 5°F, we recommend recalibrating to maintain accuracy. Once calibrated, shifts in ambient temperature within the acceptable range (10°C-30°C) should not affect accuracy.

Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for accurate measurement of your sample:

  1. **Clean Prism:** Open the cover plate and carefully wipe the detection prism with a soft cloth.
  2. **Apply Sample:** Take several drops of the solution to be tested. Place them on the detection prism. Gently close the cover plate to avoid air bubbles and ensure the solution spreads evenly over the prism surface.
  3. **Observe Reading:** Align the instrument's light entrance panel with a light source or bright area. Look through the eyepiece to observe the field of view. If the scale is unclear, rotate the eyepiece adjustment knob to focus.
  4. **Read Concentration:** Ensure the blue-white boundary in the field of view is clear. The scale value where this boundary line crosses the graduated scale indicates the concentration of the solution.

Maintenance

Proper care and maintenance will ensure the longevity and accuracy of your refractometer:

  • **Cleaning:** Clean the instrument between each measurement using a soft, damp cloth. Failure to clean the prism regularly can lead to inaccurate results and damage to the prism's coating.
  • **Handling:** This is an optical instrument. Handle it with care and store it properly to prevent damage to optical components and its basic structure.
  • **Chemical Exposure:** Do not measure abrasive or corrosive chemicals with this instrument, as they can damage the prism's coating.
  • **Moisture:** Do not expose the instrument to damp working conditions, and never immerse it in water. If the instrument becomes foggy, water has entered the body.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Inaccurate Readings
  • Improper calibration.
  • Prism or cover plate is dirty.
  • Sample and refractometer are at different temperatures.
  • Recalibrate the instrument using distilled water.
  • Clean the prism and cover plate thoroughly.
  • Allow the sample to temperature adjust on the prism for 30 seconds before reading.

User Tips

  • For the most accurate results, always ensure the refractometer and your sample are at a similar temperature before taking a reading. Allow about 30 seconds for temperature equalization after applying the sample.
  • If the scale appears blurry, simply rotate the eyepiece to bring it into sharp focus. This is a common adjustment and does not indicate a fault with the device.
  • Regular cleaning of the prism and cover plate is crucial. Even small residues can lead to incorrect measurements.
  • Store your refractometer in its protective case when not in use to prevent damage to its delicate optical components.

Warranty and Support

For any service, repair, or warranty inquiries, please contact the manufacturer or your authorized dealer. Do not attempt to repair the instrument yourself, as this may void the warranty and cause further damage.
